Terri Schiavo's brother Bobby Schindler has endorsed Mike Huckabee for president and his support could help the former Arkansas governor receive more votes today in Florida. Schindler has been an outspoken advocate of the disabled and his family's foundation has helped patients like Terri get appropriate medical treatment.
Schindler says he supports Huckabee for his views on the sanctity of life.
"I am pleased to announce my personal support of Governor Mike Huckabee’s candidacy for President of the United States," Schindler said, adding that the endorsement didn't represent the foundation.
"Governor Huckabee has a long and distinguished record of championing the rights of the unborn and vulnerable in our nation," Schindler added, according to a statement LifeNews.com obtained.
"His commitment to the cause of life makes him uniquely qualified to lead our nation through the moral and ethical quagmire that has resulted from 35 years of disrespect for innocent human life," Schindler added.
"I am confident that Governor Huckabee recognizes all life as having value and dignity and, as President, will not only fight to defend the lives of the unborn, but will fight with just as much passion to protect those who, like my sister Terri Schiavo, live with cognitive disabilities," Schindler concluded.
Terri was killed on March 31, 2005 when her former husband won a protracted legal battle against the Schindler family for the right to disconnect her feeding tube.
Doctors who examined Terri say she was not in a persistent vegetative state and that her condition could have been improved has she been given access to more medical care and rehabilitative treatment.
Michael Schiavo eventually founded a political action committee called TerriPAC to attack pro-life lawmakers who aided her family in their fight to save Terri's life. After violating FEC reporting requirements on numerous occasions and slapped with fines from the agency, Michael closed the group at the end of 2007.
The Schindler family started the Terri Schindler Schiavo Foundation and has helped disabled patients and opposed assisted suicide and euthanasia since Terri's death.

Missouri Right to Life, an anti-abortion organization, has endorsed former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee for president.
Thr group's board of directors and political action committee cited Huckabee's issue positions, his level of support nationwide and in Missouri, and his "steadfast support of pro-life principles during more than ten years of public service."
Dave Plemmons of Missouri Right to Life said the group's board chose to weigh in on the race after Fred Thompson dropped out of the presidential race.
"Mike Huckabee was the most acceptable candidate on life issues," Plemmons told KY3-TV.
"Other candidates who are viable have problems with either abortion, or embryonic stem cell research. Mike Huckabee's pro-life record is stellar," Plemmons added, referring to John McCain and Mitt Romney -- both of whom endorse some embryonic stem cell research.

Tennessee Right to Life, on Monday, became the next pro-life group to issue an endorsement for Mike Huckabee -- the former Arkansas governor many pro-life advocates consider the strongest pro-life candidate on the GOP side. As LifeNews.com has reported, Tennessee joins its sister affiliates in Missouri, Arizona, Georgia and Montana.
Tennessee is one of the states with a primary election on Super Tuesday and Tennessee Right to Life officials told LifeNews.com on Monday they hope Republicans will side with Huckabee.
The strength of Governor Huckabee’s public record on matters concerning the protection of human life and strong support among the organization’s grassroots members were key to making the decision, they said.
“The beauty of a grassroots organization is that your members set the priorities,” the group's president Brian Harris said. “For pro-life Tennesseans, the election of a sincere, proven pro-life president is paramount."
“Our members recognize Mike Huckabee as ‘one of us’ and that enthusiasm is driven by his demonstrated record of leadership and sacrifice toward the shared cause of protecting life,” Harris added.
Like other state Right to Life groups behind Huckabee, Harris said his record on pro-life legislation in Arkansas helped make the difference.
There, Huckabee signed bills banning partial-birth abortion, protecting the rights of parents to help their teenage daughters avoid abortions, and protecting pregnant women and their unborn children like Laci Peterson from acts of violence.
Governor Huckabee also supports ethical stem cell research but opposes destructive embryonic stem cell research. He was the second governor in the country to sign into law a ban on human cloning and that went over well with the pro-life group.
“What I accomplished as Governor proves that there is a lot more that a pro-life president can do than wait for a Supreme Court vacancy, and I will do everything I can to promote a pro-life agenda and pass pro-life legislation,” Huckabee has said.
“If I am saddled with a Democrat Congress, I'll veto any pro-abortion legislation they pass. I will staff all relevant positions with pro-life appointees. I will use the Bully Pulpit to change hearts and minds, to move this country from a culture of death to a culture of life," Huckabee added.

Pro-life GOP presidential contenders Ron Paul and Mike Huckabee both took part in leading pro-life rallies in Washington and Atlanta protesting 35 years of abortion since the infamous 1973 Roe v. Wade decision and called for legislation protecting life from the moment of conception. Republican frontrunner John McCain, however, reiterated his support for embryo destroying stem-cell research even as his Senate colleague Sam Brownback reaffirmed his endorsement of McCain at the National March for Life.
"The debate about when life begins should not be a debate," Rep. Ron Paul told the tens of thousands of marchers rallied together on the Washington Mall. "Let me assure you that all life begins at conception."
Paul, an OB/GYN doctor who delivered more than 4,000 babies in his career, told the crowds that in medical school he "quickly learned" that "when I dealt with a pregnant woman I always had two patients."
Paul has sponsored pro-life bills such as H.R. 300, which would nullify the legal force of Roe v. Wade by removing the ability of federal courts to interfere with state laws regarding abortion. Paul also wrote legislation that would define life as beginning at conception (H.R. 1094) and renewed his call to make legal protections for life from conception.
"You cannot defend liberty without defending life," Paul firmly stated.
Paul has gained the endorsement of Norma McCorvey, "Jane Roe" of Roe v. Wade, who is reported in a press release from the Paul campaign as saying, "He has never wavered on the issue of being pro-life and has a voting record to prove it." McCorvey goes on to say, "He understands the importance of civil liberties for all, including the unborn. "
"After taking all of the presidential candidates into consideration, it is obvious that Ron Paul is the only one that doesn't just talk the talk," McCorvey stated.
Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee also led a record crowd of more than 5,000 pro-life demonstrators at a rally in Atlanta organized by Georgia Right to Life to show his support for a new state amendment that would directly challenge the foundations of Roe v. Wade.
"The Paramount Right to Human Life Amendment" or HR 536 sponsored by Rep. Martin Scott, R-Rossville would define human life as beginning at conception and state life is a right to be held above all others.
"We're in the middle of 35 years of a national nightmare that needs to end soon," Huckabee said. "I've always said I got into politics because I'm pro-life."
"There cannot be a geographical distinction when it comes down to something that is either right or wrong," Huckabee continued. "The logic that each of the states can come up with their own definition of how to respect human life is the logic of the Civil War. And we saw how that turned out."
Huckabee emphasized that abortion "is not a political issue, it is a moral issue" and called for a similar amendment protecting life to the US constitution. The candidate did not mention his own run for the GOP nomination, which is struggling from lack of funds. Huckabee has received the endorsement of Georgia Right to Life.
While campaigning in Florida where he hopes to pick up another primary win, Arizona Sen. John McCain told the Catholic News Agency (CNA) that he still stands by his support for embryonic stem-cell research on what he called "surplus" embryos. The statements came even as staunchly pro-life Sen. Sam Brownback repeated his strong endorsement of McCain at the National March for Life and tried to reassure the crowds of McCain's pro-life credentials. McCain's choice appeared to convey the agony of "personally pro-life" politicians who support legal abortion saying his vote was "a very agonizing and tough decision."
"All I can say to you is that I went back and forth, back and forth on it and I came in on one of the toughest decisions I've ever had, in favor of that research. And one reason being very frankly is those embryos will be either discarded or kept in permanent frozen status," he told CNA. McCain then added, "I understand how divisive this is among the pro-life community."
The latest poll from NBC and the Wall Street Journal shows Sen. McCain as the national frontrunner with 29% support, followed by Huckabee with 23 percent, former Gov. Mitt Romney at 20 percent, Rudy Giuliani at 15 percent, and Ron Paul at 4 percent. McCain and Romney are currently neck-and-neck going into Florida, January 29, the last primary before the Super Tuesday primary on February 5.
