March 19, 2008 news headlines:
The [UK] Telegraph has reported that Gorbachev claims to be a "Christian." Gorbachev just paid a visit to Assisi, a photo-op La Stampa has dubbed his "spiritual perestroika." The Telegraph article said that his visit "confirmed" years of rumors that Gorbachev is a Christian. As the good propaganda piece it is, the Telegraph article cites no opposing view.
Among Gorbachev's claims was Russia's "transition to democracy."
Of course, there are those who disagree with Gorbachev's definition of democracy. Senator Graham, who calls Putin a "one-man dictatorship"; Garry Kasparov; Jeff Nyquist; Alexander Litvinenko (assassinated); and that pesky Anna Politkovskaya, the "woman who shamed Moscow" (also assassinated).
If Russia is democratic, I would hate to see a dictatorship.
Past behavior
Gorbachev a Christian? Amazing that such nonsense goes unchallenged. Gorbachev oversaw the invasion of Afghanistan in which 1.5 - 2 million Afghans were killed, 90% were civilians. Between 2 and 4 million Afghans were wounded. It is reported that at the height of the war, Soviet troops deliberately targeted children, dropping booby-trapped toys from airplanes (Black Book of Communism, p. 719). Also, it is estimated that more than 30,000 children between the ages of six and fourteen were abducted and sent to the Soviet Union.
Targeting civilians. Targeting innocent children. That is communism.
This is the same Gorbachev who, in 1987, told his fellow communists that "There must be no letup in the war against religion because as long as religion exists, communism cannot prevail. We must intensify the obliteration of all religions."
Don McAlvany wrote, "If one studies the writings of Lenin, Stalin, Manuiliski, Andropov, and Soviet leaders right down through Gorbachev, one will conclude that the Soviet leadership from 1917 to the present has never deviated from the Marxist/Leninist goal of world domination."Our Lady of the Roses warned us on June 18, 1992 that Yeltsin and Gorbachev were agents of satan, that they were executing a master plan against the United States (Read more...).
Cardinal Sladkevicius of Lithuania, a witness to communist persecution of the Church, has warned, "The West has committed a serious error: it is trusting Gorbachev." The Cardinal also said, "Behind the openings of perestroika, a sham can be hidden: I am truly scandalized by the enormous and gratuitous credit which is given to the Kremlin outside the U.S.S.R."
Perestroika Deception
The Washington Post reported on February 11, 1992: "It is now known that the KGB infiltrated the independence movements and democracy parties that sprang up around the Soviet Union during the Gorbachev liberalization... Since many of these parties have now come to power, it means that the KGB agents and informers are represented in the highest levels of government throughout every East bloc country and the former Soviet republics."
Gorbachev is no pacifist. Mona Charen reported: "During the Gorbachev years alone the Soviets increased their number of ICBMs by 715, compared to the United States' 70—a ratio of 10 to 1 in favor of the Soviets; during that period they added 270 long-range bombers compared to our 103; they build 490 submarine based ballistic missiles while we build 200; they built 54 nuclear submarines compared to our 24; and they produced 13,100 multiple rocket launchers compared to our 1,635."
The communists have found a lot of "useful idiots" in the Church and in the media to promote the ongoing theatrical fiction of a "converted" Russia.

Sister Lucy: Russia will take over all countries, without exception
Sister Lucy, in a July 15, 1946 interview with William Thomas Walsh, stated the following: "What Our Lady wants, is that the Holy Father and all the bishops consecrate Russia to Her Immaculate Heart, by a special ceremony. If that consecration is done, the Holy Virgin will convert Russia and peace will reign over the world. If not, the errors of Russia will be propagated everywhere."

Gorbachev
defends Putin's methods...
The Los Angeles Times reported on July 29, 2007:
Former Soviet President Mikhail S. Gorbachev, whose reforms played a major role in freeing the Soviet Union from totalitarianism, defended authoritarian moves by Russian President Vladimir V. Putin as necessary "to prevent the disintegration of the country."
Putin has chosen "to use certain methods … that were even authoritarian to some extent," the Nobel Peace Prize laureate said in a recent interview. "But even though he used those methods sometimes, he continued to have the same goals — the goals of moving toward democracy, toward market economics."
Gorbachev attributed tensions between Washington and Moscow to the "victory complex" of some U.S. leaders, and said the two governments should tone down harsh rhetoric and work together to solve global problems.
Asked what advice he would have for Putin and President Bush, Gorbachev replied:
"First of all, to preserve the climate of trust that emerged during the years of perestroika, when we were able to work together with the United States to discuss the issues and ultimately to end the Cold War. I believe that this trust is now in jeopardy."
Perestroika, as Gorbachev's reform policies of the late 1980s are known, played a major role in the collapse of the Soviet Union and laid the groundwork for U.S.-Russian friendship in the 1990s.
But in the last few years, tensions have grown again. Besides the perceived rollback of democracy in Russia, U.S. dissatisfaction has been fueled by Moscow's alleged use of oil and gas export contracts to make political demands on its neighbors, differences over how to deal with Iran's nuclear program, a dispute over the future of Kosovo and other issues.
Russians have been angered by U.S. plans to install an antimissile system in Eastern Europe. Washington says it is needed to defend Europe and North America, citing the possibility of missile attacks by Iran.
Moscow has expressed fear that the move would be a step toward a global missile-defense system aimed at devaluing Russia's and China's nuclear deterrents, and that the system could be modified for offensive missiles that would be close to Russia's border.
Tensions have been further stoked by the radiation poisoning in London last year of Alexander Litvinenko, a former KGB agent turned fierce Kremlin critic. In a written statement prepared shortly before his death, Litvinenko accused Putin of ordering his killing, a charge the Kremlin has dismissed as "nonsense."
The widespread perception in the United States is that the deterioration of U.S.-Russian ties has been caused by the Kremlin's actions. But Gorbachev said much of the blame should go to a "victory complex," which he described as a view expressed by some top U.S. officials that pressure exerted by former President Reagan brought about defeat of the Soviet Union in the Cold War. He included Vice President Dick Cheney among this group.
"I believe that this victory complex is very dangerous," Gorbachev said. "The United States has really not achieved anything alone. I believe that only when the United States worked with others was it able to achieve anything. Where they acted alone, the result was a real mess."
Gorbachev said he was encouraged, however, by the atmosphere of this month's informal Bush-Putin summit in Kennebunkport, Maine.
"The more difficult the situation is, the more dialogue there should be, so I am pleased that it seems to be beginning to change," he said. "It seems now that perhaps with the moderating help of President Bush the father, the senior President Bush, something is beginning to happen and something useful is resulting."
Gorbachev expressed hope that the recent summit would lead to a compromise on the antimissile system, ease Russia's concerns and bring international cooperation on such matters.
Another problem aggravating U.S.-Russian relations, Gorbachev said, is that Western journalists, analysts and politicians often fail to acknowledge the depth of Russia's problems in the 1990s, under then-President Boris N. Yeltsin, and the practical justifications for some of the non-democratic methods used by Putin to reestablish the authority of the Russian state after he became president on the last day of 1999.
In the late 1990s, "the country was really in dire straits," Gorbachev said.
"People were living in poverty and there was chaos in the country…. So in this situation Putin was faced with the question of what kind of methods to use in order to prevent the disintegration of the country."
Gorbachev did not spell out what sort of authoritarian steps he believed Putin had taken. But Putin has been criticized by democracy advocates for establishing state control over all nationwide television networks, ending the direct election of governors and establishing a pliable parliament with election rules that make it difficult for opposition forces to win seats.
Although Gorbachev typically defends Putin in public comments, at the same time he is the key political backer and an important financial supporter of the country's most fiercely independent newspaper, Novaya Gazeta, which frequently carries reporting and commentary sharply critical of Putin. Copies of the newspaper are prominently displayed in the lobby of the Gorbachev Foundation, which studies social, economic and political issues.
********The true meaning of the "conversion of Russia"
One of the greatest of all Fatima experts, Fr. Joaquin Alonso (the official archivist of Fatima), who had talked with Sister Lucy many times, explains what the TRUE CONVERSION of Russia will be:
"the 'conversion' of Russia is not to be limited to the return of the Russian people to the Orthodox Christian religions, rejecting the Marxist atheism of the Soviets, but rather, it refers purely, plainly and simply to the total, integral conversion of Russia to the one true Church of Christ, the Catholic Church."
There is only one true Christian Church that dates back to Christ, founded on St. Peter, and promised by Christ that the gates of hell would not prevail against it. That Church is the Roman Catholic Church. All other Christian religions are separated from the authority of the Vicar of Christ (the Pope), and espouse various heresies contrary to the teachings of Christ. All other Christian religions were founded by merely sinful men; they were not founded by Christ Himself.
Pope Pius XI clearly stated:
"For if, as they continually state, they long to be united with Us and ours, why do they not hasten to enter the Church, the Mother and mistress of all Christ's faithful?" (Pope Pius XI, encyclical Mortalium animos, January 6, 1928)
Also, Pope Pius XII warned about ambiguous words regarding union with the one true Church, the Roman Catholic Church:
“The Catholic doctrine will have to be proposed and expressed totally and integrally: what the Catholic Church teaches about the true nature and means of justification, about the constitution of the Church, about the primacy of the jurisdiction of the Roman Pontiff, about the only true union which is accomplished with the return of the dissidents to the only true Church of Christ, must not be passed over in silence or covered over in ambiguous words.” (Pope Pius XII, “On the Ecumenical Movement,” December 20, 1949)
