Organization accuses United Nations of complicity in "genocide" against Mexicans

Mexican pro-lifers to UN: Stop murdering our children...

Members of Mexico's National Pro-Life Committee held a protest recently outside the offices of the United Nations in response to the organization's continuing support for abortion in Mexico and worldwide.

The protest took something of a dramatic turn, with three of the protesters dressing in costumes depicting an abortionist businessmen with profit as his puppeteer, who in turn pretended to kill another participant dressed as a chick in its nest.

In an accompanying letter to the United Nations Organization, the Committee's President and Director writes that the organization "has confused its mission and has been converted into the greatest enemy of the peace by proposing birth control and abortion as solutions to the demographic challenges that the world confronts."

"It has pressured our country through the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), as well as the office of the High Commissioner of Human Rights in Mexico, to legalize, disseminate, and implement such practices," adds the letter.

The Committee accused the UN of direct involvement in the thousands of abortions that have taken place in Mexico City since 2007, when it was legalized by the city government.

"The United Nations Organization (UNO) is partially responsible for promoting abortion through emergency contraception, through mechanical and chemical means, curettage, endouterine manual aspiration, and chemical poisoning in the maternity hospitals of Mexico City, and through the training of Mexico City policemen by the United Nations Population Fund," they write.

"Tragically, these actions have caused the deaths of 10,340 Mexican human beings and day after day up to 40 are murdered by these means."

The letter concludes by demanding "a halt to the genocide, a halt to the foreign intervention in our country with criminal purposes, which results in the extermination of Mexican babies." 

"We demand that the violence cease against Mexican women and their children, that the UNO fulfills its mission to preserve the peace, preserving and defending the lives of all human beings without distinction, instead of serving only the interests of the powerful, of those who enrich themselves through the lucrative abortion business.  We demand that the UNO be what it should be, an instrument of peace and not an executioner."

Influential abortion advocacy group at UN calls on committees to pressure states on abortion...

The Center for Reproductive Rights (CRR) just released a new and updated version of their “signature” document that uses the non-binding recommendations of UN committees to argue that sovereign nations must legalize abortion as part of their international legal obligations.  “Bringing Rights to Bear ” claims that these recommendations reflect “the growing recognition among these UN bodies that reproductive rights are firmly grounded in international human rights treaties.”

For years, CRR has been at the forefront of a what some have called a "stealth strategy" to redefine longstanding human rights like the right to life, the right to privacy and the right to be free from discrimination and insert abortion rights into those broad provisions.  An integral component of the CRR strategy is to get the UN committees that oversee nations’ compliance with their treaty obligations to reinterpret the treaties to include abortion. 

UN compliance committees contain a large percentage of personnel from pro-abortion groups and have become increasingly active in reinterpreting UN documents and pressuring governments to follow their interpretations.

“Bringing Rights to Bear” catalogues the successes of the CRR strategy and cites numerous examples of UN committees calling for legalized abortion and widespread access to contraception.  Unlike the treaties themselves, the recommendations of the treaty monitoring bodies are non-binding, but the CRR paper argues that these non-binding recommendations must be used to “guide governments and advocates in further promoting human rights,” including abortion.  CRR calls for using these non-binding committee recommendations “to support legal challenges in national, regional, and international human rights institutions.”

The CRR document urges the UN committees to continue to “emphasize that abortion should be a safe and legal option for women in the case of an unwanted pregnancy, even where there is a disproportionate reliance on abortion due to the limited availability of contraceptive methods.” 

The document also urges the committees to issue detailed directions to tell states “how to overcome barriers to [contraceptive] access, such as lack of availability to certain methods, legal restrictions on contraception, excessive regulation (including requirements for third-party authorization), cost, lack of or inadequate insurance coverage, and coercion in the reproductive health context.”

Even though CRR and its allies call for these reinterpretations, in fact only the most recent UN human rights treaty, on the rights of persons with disabilities, mentions “sexual and reproductive health,” and only with the strict understanding that the term does not include abortion.

The left wing group Human Rights Watch notes that since 1995 there have been over 100 instances where the UN committees have pressed over 65 nations to legalize or increase access to abortion. Recently, though, some governments have begun to push back at the committees and stand up for their pro-life laws.

CRR is one of the most influential abortion advocacy groups at the United Nations and works worldwide to mount legal challenges to abortion laws.  CRR’s “expert litigation committee” and board of advisors include three UN special rapporteurs, as well as the former head of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Nafis Sadik.

The CRR will release briefing papers on maternal mortality as well as marriage and private life as part of its revised “Bringing Rights To Bear” series.

United Nations tells Hondurans that abortion ban is “a crime”...

At the latest round of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) Committee meetings in New York, members of the CEDAW committee criticized Hondurans for their pro-life laws, telling their delegation that the total ban on abortions is “a crime.”  Committee member Heisoo Shin told the Honduran delegation that it was necessary for the government to “create a momentum, a social force that stops the crime that allows a woman to die, to risk unsafe abortion and not have self-determination.”

When the Honduran delegation responded that government efforts were aimed at prevention of early and unwanted pregnancies, CEDAW member Silvia Pimentel, faculty member at the Pontifical Catholic University of Sao Paulo, fired back that the government had been as comprehensive as possible on prevention and that “there are situations where prevention is not enough.” She continued, “Women have their reasons to seek an abortion, which should be respected.”  Pimentel admitted that those reasons did not always include a threat to the mother’s life, but that she could not understand the abortion ban in Honduras where “the interests of the fetus outweigh those of the mother.”

In response to the statements, a Honduran representative reminded the CEDAW committee that under article 67 of the country’s constitution unborn children have the same rights as born children. The head of the Honduran delegation acknowledged recommendations had been submitted to her government by other UN human rights commissions regarding the termination of pregnancy and that these were being considered as possible reform issues.

Driving home the committee’s stance during Hungary’s review, Silvia Pimentel criticized the content of Hungarians’ planning materials. The Brazilian expressed concern over brochures entitled “Life is a Miracle,” saying that conservatives often construed such material as reason for not having an abortion. Other CEDAW committee members pressed Belize, Brazil, Kenya and Liechtenstein on their abortion laws, calling on them to institute legal reform to formally permit abortions.

States regularly refute or ignore the committee’s questions on abortion with the understanding that the questions are not based upon obligations of the treaty, which does not mention abortion, but rather are based on the committee’s personal interpretations of the treaty. 

In a similar vein, delegations listened patiently as committee members used article 16 on marriage and family to press for homosexual and lesbian rights. Pimentel questioned Honduras on the subject, Anamah Tan questioned Brazil on whether “married homosexual couples” were protected under the country’s marriage laws, and Ruth Halperin-Kaddari questioned South Korea on the name and focus of the government’s “Healthy Family Act.” Halperin-Kaddari said that its traditional notions of the nuclear family seemed to be “judgmental” of other forms of family, such as divorced, cohabitating, and same-sex couples.

The 2007 CEDAW sessions wrap up in New York this week. Earlier this year, the committee announced it would be moving the bulk of its meetings to Geneva starting in January 2008.
