Muslims Become Roman Catholic in Large Numbers...

Pope Benedict is a source of continual surprise and consternation for the Muslim world. One of the most famous incidents was when the Holy Father quoted the Byzantine emperor, Manuel II Paleologus, concerning the Muslims back in 2006.

The Pope read a passage from the emperor’s writings that went as follows: “Show me just what Muhammad brought that was new and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached.” The entire Muslim community was angered by this. Pope Benedict then said that he was sorry that they were upset by what he said. The Muslim community at large took this to mean that the Pope was apologizing for his comments. This was far from the truth.

More recently, Pope Benedict has once again set the Muslim community back on their heels. This occurred during the Easter Vigil at St. Peter’s Basilica when the Pope Baptized Magdi Cristiano Allam. Allam is an Egyptian-Italian and Italy’s leading journalist.

This is not a rare incident. Many of the higher ups of the Muslim religion are converting, not just the people in the mosques. There are many Muslim scholars, politicians, artists, writers, musicians, athletes, and even former terrorists who have converted to Christianity. In fact, it has been reported by Charisma magazine that “more Muslims have converted to Christianity in the last two decades than in all of history.” The numbers bear this statement out.

Over the past few years, some 200,000 Muslims have converted to Christianity. In the year 2005, 2.5 million Muslims in Russia became Orthodox Christians. In the past two years, 50,000 Iranian Muslims have become Christian.

While it is common for Muslim to convert to more evangelical Christianity, there are still many who are finding their way into the Catholic Church. 15,000 Muslims a year convert in France, 10,000 of which become Catholic.

Another important development is the announcement of a Catholic-Muslim seminar to be held in Rome this coming November. In an effort to develop Catholic-Muslim dialogue, 24 religious leaders from both sides will meet to discuss the theme of “Love of God, Love of Neighbor”.

Pray that more and more Muslims are converted to the One, True Church of Jesus Christ.
