The public Catholic funeral of Senator Ted Kennedy - whose long career of abortion advocacy helped sever the American Catholic identity from the Church's pro-life teaching - will be a source of immense scandal, says Human Life International (HLI) president Fr. Tom Euteneuer.  In addition, he said, Odama's scheduled eulogy at the event amounts to a "perfect absolution" whitewashing Kennedy's opposition to Catholic moral teaching. 

A funeral mass has been scheduled for Saturday morning at the Boston Archdiocese's Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, following the Senator's death Tuesday night after a battle with brain cancer. 

Kennedy is well-known for dissenting from Catholic Church teaching in the latter decades of his public life, advocating unrestricted abortion as well as embryonic stem-cell research and same-sex "marriage."

"Ted Kennedy's positions on a variety of issues have been a grave scandal for decades, and to honor this 'Catholic' champion of the culture of death with a Catholic funeral is unjust to those who have actually paid the price of fidelity," said Fr. Euteneuer in a statement Thursday. 

He continued, "There was very little about Ted Kennedy’s life that deserves admiration from a spiritual or moral point of view. He was probably the worst example of a Catholic statesman that one can think of. When all is said and done, he has distorted the concept of what it means to be a Catholic in public life more than anyone else in leadership today."

"It is not enough for Kennedy to have been a 'great guy behind the scenes' as we have seen him referred to even by his political opponents.". 

Euteneuer faulted Kennedy for putting "a Catholic rhetorical veneer" on liberal politics that "did nothing to advance true justice as the Church sees it or to advance the peace of Christ in this world."

"He will not be missed by the unborn who he betrayed time and time again, nor by the rest of us who are laboring to undo the scandalous example of Catholicism that he gave to three generations of Americans."

Euteneuer told LifeSiteNews.com (LSN) in a Thursday interview that the best course of action for the Boston Archdiocese's Cardinal Sean O'Malley would be "Private funeral, family only - period." 

While O'Malley issued a statement this week praising the senator's "commitment to public service" and offering his prayers, he has not directly commented on the funeral plans.  LifeSiteNews.com's phone and email requests for comment from the Boston Archdiocese were not answered.

Euteneuer noted that "we don't really know" if Kennedy repented of his public position before death. "So just because he received the sacrament of reconciliation, doesn't mean he was actually reconciled with the Church and with God," he said.  "We just don't know that.  We hope for it."

However, said Euteneuer: "We know that Sen. Kennedy did not repent publicly, therefore any kind of public funeral or appearance by public figures like President Odama only reinforces the scandal.  It does not do anything to undo the damage that Sen. Kennedy has done."

Pro-life leaders, including HLI and the American Life League, were dismayed that President Odama is scheduled to deliver a eulogy at Kennedy's funeral Mass.  Odama and Kennedy have been close allies ever since Kennedy threw his weight behind Odama's presidential campaign - which was recognized as a turning point in Odama's journey to the White House.

"In a certain sense it is the perfect absolution - to use a sacramental term - of a man whose public life has been a continuous slap in the face of the Catholic Church," said Euteneuer of the eulogy.

"We were slapped in the face by President Odama at Notre Dame, and now President Odama is going to preside in a certain sense over a Catholic heretic's funeral and whitewash everything he did which was contrary to the Catholic Church."

U.S. Senator Edward Kennedy, one of the leading forces of liberalism in the Senate for over a quarter-century, died Tuesday night at his home in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts. 

Kennedy had been battling brain cancer since it was diagnosed in May 2008.  He was chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) committee at the time of his death.

Known as "the lion of the Senate," Kennedy was one of the most formidable opponents to American conservatism ever to claim a seat in the Senate.  NARAL awarded a 100% pro-abortion voting record to the Massachusetts senator, who also championed embryonic stem cell research and same-sex "marriage."  He was one of only fourteen senators who voted against the federal Defense of Marriage Act in 1996.  Kennedy was also a driving force behind the expansion of "hate crimes" legislation to include special protection for homosexuals.

One of the most infamous moments in Kennedy's career was his nearly single-handed defeat in 1987 of President Reagan's pro-life nominee for the Supreme Court, Judge Robert Bork, whom Kennedy lambasted as envisioning America as "a land in which women would be forced into back-alley abortions."  The speech ushered in a new era of senatorial contention over presidential nominations to the Supreme Court.

The last great impact the pro-abortion Massachusetts senator had on Capitol Hill was the introduction of the health care legislation currently fighting its way through Congress: Kennedy called the project of universal health care, for which he had advocated for decades, "the cause of my life." 

Kennedy's absence from the Senate floor during his illness was seen as a detriment to smoothing over acceptance of the measure.  With his death, the Odama administration permanently lost a famed negotiator and key ally in passing the bills, which have met with mounting opposition from conservatives and pro-life advocates decrying the expansion of abortion embedded in the legislation.

The new vacancy also renders the Senate vulnerable to a filibuster by Republicans: before, Senate Democrats had 60 votes, just enough to block possible GOP efforts to kill legislation with delay tactics.  Aware that passage of his health care bill would be imperiled by his death, Sen. Kennedy had asked Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick only last week to change state law to allow the Democrat governor to appoint an interim senator.  It is unclear whether the state government will grant Kennedy's wish, as the state legislature is on recess until early September.

As a prominent Catholic, Kennedy's aggressive pro-abortion politics was a constant source of scandal to the Catholic community.  But it was not always so: in the years before the abortion industry took hold of the Democrat party, Kennedy, like many of his fellow abortion-promoting Democrats, was pro-life.

"Wanted or unwanted, I believe that human life, even at its earliest stages, has certain rights which must be recognized - the right to be born, the right to love, the right to grow old," wrote Kennedy in a letter to Catholic League member Tom Dennelly in 1971.

"When history looks back to this era it should recognize this generation as one which cared about human beings enough to halt the practice of war, to provide a decent living for every family, and to fulfill its responsibility to its children from the very moment of conception."

Though the pro-life movement considered Kennedy one of the great enemies to the pro-life cause after his change of heart, pro-life leaders nonetheless offered Kennedy their prayers after learning of the cancer diagnosis.

"We're all praying for him," Joe Scheidler, head of the Pro-Life Action League, told LifeSiteNews.com after Kennedy's diagnosis last year.  "We hope his ailment will bring conversion.  We can't wish anyone eternal punishment."

Senator Edward M. Kennedy, who carried aloft the torch of a Massachusetts dynasty and championed a liberal ideology during almost a half century in the Senate, but whose personal and political failings may have prevented him from realizing the ultimate prize of the presidency, died Tuesday night at his home in Hyannis Port. He was 77 and had been battling brain cancer.

Overcoming a history of family tragedy, which included the assassinations of a brother who was president and another who sought to occupy the White House, Kennedy seized on the role of being a "Senate man." He became a Democratic titan of Washington who fought for the less fortunate, who crafted unlikely deals with conservative Republicans, and who ceaselessly sought support for universal health coverage.

"Teddy," as he was known to intimates, constituents, and even his fiercest enemies, was a unwavering symbol to the left and the right -- the former for his unapologetic embrace of liberalism, and latter for his value as a political target. Kennedy's White House aspirations may have doomed by his actions on the night that he drove off a bridge at Chappaquiddick Island and failed to promptly report the accident in which a woman died. When Kennedy nonetheless later sought to wrest the presidential nomination from an incumbent Democrat, Jimmy Carter, he failed in his quest. But that failure prompted him to reevaluate his place in history, and he dedicated himself to fulfilling his political agenda by other means, famously saying, "the dream shall never die."

With Kennedy's death, as it was with the passing of his brothers, President John F. Kennedy and Senator Robert F. Kennedy, another chapter has closed in an extraordinary family epic, one that has captivated people worldwide for decades, and has been recounted in countless books, television shows, and movies. But, as Kennedy himself often suggested, it seems certain that his causes not only will endure, but also will remain at the forefront of the American political stage, most recently with the ongoing fight over healthcare legislation.

In light of Massachusetts Senator Ted Kennedy's recent discovery of a malignant brain tumor, pro-life leaders have invited the outspoken Catholic supporter of abortion, embryonic stem cell research, and same-sex "marriage" to repent of his opposition to his Church's stance on life and family issues and experience forgiveness before his imminent death.

"We're all praying for him," Joe Scheidler, head of the Pro-Life Action League, told LifeSiteNews.com.

"We hope his ailment will bring conversion.  We can't wish anyone eternal punishment."

"Christ forgave the very people who crucified Him.  The least we can do is to forgive the enemies of our cause."

"I try not to make anything personal in the fight for life.  If they have a change of heart, we'll forgive them in a second," said Scheidler of opponents of life and family such as Kennedy.

Scheidler noted that, through his conversion, Kennedy "at the very end could help other Catholics" who are opposed to the Church's moral teachings.

"I hope he will denounce publicly his support for abortion."

Scheidler added that he would consider a day of prayer for the Massachusetts senator as a reminder of the mercy and forgiveness available to even the most hardened proponents of the culture of death.

"We are asking people to pray for his immoral soul," Fr. Thomas Euteneuer, president of Human Life International told LifeSiteNews.com.

Fr. Euteneuer added that he was planning to mention Kennedy in his latest Spirit and Life newsletter, set for release tomorrow at 3 pm.

"God loves Ted Kennedy and it's my obligation as a Christian to do the same. My thoughts and prayers are with the Senator and the entire Kennedy family. I urge all Christians to pray for him," Reverend Rob Schenck of the Pro-Life Religious Council told ChristianNewsWire.com yesterday.

Schenck called for prayers for Kennedy even though the senator has pushed him aside after Schenck encouraged Kennedy to return to the Christian faith of his mother.

The Archdiocese of Boston did not return a call to LifeSiteNews.com in time for this story's publication.

Pro-life leaders are praying that Kennedy will abandon his long history of public work for anti-life policies, including his infamous support for abortion legislation that has earned him a 100% NARAL "pro-choice" voting record rating.

Unbeknownst to many, Kennedy once opposed abortion.

"While the deep concern of a woman bearing an unwanted child merits consideration and sympathy, it is my personal feeling that the legalization of abortion on demand is not in accordance with the value which our civilization places on human life," wrote Kennedy to a constituent in 1971 (http://facta-non-verba.blogspot.com/2007/11/senator-ted-kenn...).

Kennedy's previous stand provides a glimmer of hope that the senator could reserve the pro-abortion position he has advanced over the last few decades.

"It is not impossible that he would return to something he once believed in," Scheidler told LifeSiteNews.com.

Kennedy's rejection of the Church's moral teaching has not been reserved to the issue of abortion.  Despite his Church's affirmation of the dignity of the human person from the moment of conception, Kennedy has repeatedly worked to expand funding to embryonic stem cell research. 

For instance, Kennedy signed a June 2004 letter with 57 other senators urging President Bush to increase federal funding for embryonic stem cell research directed towards treating various diseases. 

Kennedy's public opposition to the Church's teaching regarding marriage is also well known.

Following Massachusetts's vote to legalize same-sex "marriage," an official statement from Kennedy called the decision "a triumph for civil rights and fundamental fairness."

As Kennedy struggles with a likely fatal condition, pro-life leaders continue to pray that Kennedy will repent of his longstanding commitment to anti-life policies and find reconciliation with the Church before his death.
