Worldwide Media Swarms the Vatican to Report on the Conclave...

Staten Island Advance reported on March 5, 2013:
Cardinal Timothy Dolan and the other princes of the church wished Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI well as they prepared for a public prayer service on Wednesday at St. Peter's Basilica under the watchful eyes of more than 5,000 journalists who are eagerly awaiting the naming of a new pope.
The cardinals extended "devoted greetings" and "renewed gratitude" in a telegram extolling Benedict -- who was the first pope to retire in nearly 600 years when he officially resigned last Thursday -- for his "tireless work in the vineyard of the Lord."
"Today we said wouldn't it it be efficacious for the whole college of cardinals to be on their knees in front of the real presence of our Lord at St. Peter's Basilica," Cardinal Dolan, archbishop of New York, said in an interview on the Catholic Channel of Sirius Radio.
Joseph Zwilling, director of communications for the Archdiocese of New York, noted that Cardinal Dolan "has said on multiple occasions that one of the principal benefits of these daily 'congregations' -- the meetings of all the Cardinals -- is the opportunity to pray together. To do so publicly in this setting is a beautiful witness -- and an opportunity to invite the public to join them in prayer."
As for setting the date for the conclave, the cardinals apparently want to get to know each other and the issues better before they start casting ballots.
"I'm wondering myself," Dolan said when asked why a date hadn't been set yet for the conclave.
He added that about 60 percent of the cardinals, including himself, were new to the process.
"I'm among that majority, so I don't know how it works...but people don't seem to be in a hurry," Dolan said.
Cardinals who have been in conclave before see a "necessity is to come together in prayer, fraternal camaraderie, a sense of trust and confidence and speak openly to one another and then after a while we'll say, 'OK, it's time to set the conclave.'"
A slow process of deliberation in the General Congregations apparently is favored by the veteran cardinals.
"The veteran cardinals say these (General Congregations) are very important because one needs to have the data necessary, the peace of mind necessary, to have made up his mind before he enters the conclave and if not a conclave can go on forever and we don't want that to happen," Dolan said."There's a wisdom to the chemistry of this."
The Vatican, which dealt with an imposter bishop trying to crash the General Congregations of the cardinals on Monday, announced that the public is welcome at the cardinals' service. However, the Vatican announced that the Sistine Chapel was closed to visitors in preparation for the conclave, although no date has been set for the beginning of those sessions to elect a new pope. The eyes of the world are watching as, according to the Holy See press office, there were more than 5,000 reporters -- 4,432 temporarily accredited and 600 permanently accredited journalists -- representing 1,004 news outlets, 65 nations and 24 languages.
The service--which will be broadcast live on the Catholic TV network EWTN starting at 11 a.m. East Coast time-- is "an invitation to the entire Church to pray at this important moment," said a news release from the Vatican. "The ceremony is open to the public so any faithful who so desire may attend."

-- Cardinal Dolan (@CardinalDolan) March 4, 2013The Vatican said that "The Prayer for the Church on the Occasion of the General Congregations of the College of Cardinals" is scheduled for Wednesday at 5 p.m. Rome time and is expected to last for about an hour. The service will include the recitation of the Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary in Italian and Latin, the Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament followed by a brief time for Adoration and a simple recitation of Vespers, which are the evening prayer of the Church. Cardinal Angelo Comastri, Archpriest of St. Peter's Basilica, will offer the benediction.
The cardinals sent the following telegram to the pontiff emeritus at his temporary residence in Castel Gandolfo Apostolic Palace:
"The Cardinal Fathers, gathered at the Vatican for the General Congregations in view of the next conclave, send you their devoted greetings and express their renewed gratitude for all your illustrious Petrine ministry and for your example of generous pastoral care for the good of the Church and of the world. With their gratitude they hope to represent the recognition of 0the entire Church for your tireless work in the vineyard of the Lord. In conclusion, the members of the College of Cardinals trust in your prayers for them, as well as for the whole Church."
The General Congregations were held on Tuesday morning and will convene again on Wednesday morning. A total of 148 cardinals were present at Tuesday's General Congregation. The Vatican said there were 11 speeches given by cardinals representing each of the continents and the topics discussed were: activities of the Holy See and its relations with bishops throughout the world; Church renewal in light of Vatican Council II; the Church's position and the need for the New Evangelization in today's world with its diverse cultural environments. Number 37 of Benedict XVI's Motu Proprio concerning the beginning of the conclave was presented to the prelates but no decision regarding its date was made.
