Catholic Archdiocese of Manila imposes dress code for faithful...

The Manila [Philippines] Standard Today reported on June 24, 2007:

Swamped by complaints that some of the faithful have not been dressing up properly for mass, the Catholic Archdiocese of Manila has come out with a dress code for churchgoers.

In a circular addressed to all parish priests, chaplains and rectors of shrines in the archdiocese, Rev. Godwin Tatlonghari, assistant minister for liturgical affairs, said the guidelines had been requested by other churchgoers who have expressed dismay over the inappropriate clothing of some of their fellow Catholic churchgoers.

The archdiocesan ministry for liturgical affairs has printed posters of the proposed dress code for distribution to each parish, chapel and shrine, which will receive three copies each.

Tatlonghari noted “the increasing number of people who come to church to attend mass or other liturgical functions garbed in a way that disrespects the sanctity of the House of God and the sacredness of the Liturgical Celebration.”

He said the posters on proper attire should be displayed in areas that could be “readily and easily viewed by people who go to church.”

Listed as proper attire for going to mass were collared shirts or T-shirts, jeans or slacks, polo or long-sleeved shirts for men, and collared, long-sleeved blouses, dresses and long gowns for women. Corporate attire or office or school uniforms were also described as acceptable for church wear.

Clothes prohibited inside the church are caps, jerseys or undershirts and shorts for men, and spaghetti-strap or tank tops and other sleeveless blouses, plunging necklines and skimpy shorts and skirts for women.

Rev. Francis Lucas, president of Catholic Media Network, said every diocese had the obligation to come up with guidelines on the proper church attire for its parishioners.

“[Another] bishop may allow [clothing] banned in the guidelines. That’s his discretion,” Lucas, a parish priest in Infanta, Quezon, told Standard Today in a phone interview yesterday.

The priest said that in the Vatican City, the guidelines were stricter. There, security guards measured the skirts of women before they were allowed to enter a church, Lucas said.
