The New York Times May 24, 2011 JOPLIN, Mo. — About 1,500 people are unaccounted for in this battered city, a Fire Department official said Tuesday, as rescue workers took advantage of a few hours of sunny weather to continue searching for survivors in buildings leveled by the country’s deadliest tornado in more than 60 years. At least 122 people have died.

The National Weather Service said the tornado that struck the city Sunday evening was an EF5 storm, with winds greater than 200 mph — the most powerful category of tornado. While much of Tuesday provided a respite from the nearly unrelenting rain and wind that had hampered rescue efforts, more challenging weather may be on the way. An unusually strong weather system moving east across the Rockies is expected to mix with moist air heading north from the Gulf of Mexico, carrying with it the possibility of creating severe storms late Tuesday.

THE WALL STREET JOURNAL May 24, 2011 Despite the heavy toll, the storm system that spawned the tornado wasn't unusual for this time of year, say meteorologists. The high death toll resulted from the twister's path through a commercial area including a hospital, a nursing home, a row of crowded restaurants and several large stores. The winds, while as high as 198+ miles per hour, weren't unusual for powerful springtime tornadoes in parts of the U.S.

Highlighting the unpredictability of such lethal storms, the weeks before the twister marked an unusual lull in the number of tornadoes that normally occur this time of year, experts said. More than half the season's severe tornadoes usually strike in May and June. During the first three weeks of May, however, the number of powerful twisters had dipped to historic lows, federal meteorologists said. "We were so far below normal in the first three weeks of May that we may not catch up to normal for the month," said meteorologist Harold Brooks at the National Severe Storms Laboratory in Norman, Okla.

April was especially busy, contributing to one of the most severe spring tornado seasons on record. NOAA officials estimate there have been almost 1,000 tornadoes this year, double the total of a typical year, with storms raging from Missouri to North Carolina. This year's tally of 50 fatal tornadoes compares with about 20 in an average year. Forecasters expect severe thunderstorms, which can spawn tornadoes, to persist for the next several days, heightening the potential for more twisters before the storm system is blown out to sea and dissipates.

Strong tornadoes are "likely" Tuesday over Oklahoma, Kansas, and other areas, with the storm system moving eastward Wednesday to Southeast Missouri, Central Illinois, and surrounding states, the National Weather Service said. Tornadoes moved through the Midwest, damaging a hospital, hundreds of homes and businesses, and a helicopter.

The twister in Joplin comes on the heels last month of the largest one-day outbreak of tornadoes to date, when 226 twisters were reported during a single 24-hour period on April 27, largely in Alabama and Mississippi. All told, the cluster of tornadoes, which continued into the following day, killed more than 340 people.

This spring's outbreak surpasses any since 1953, when 519 people were killed at a time when forecasters lacked the technology and ability to warn people well before storms hit. The 1953 toll included 116 people killed when a tornado struck Flint, Mich., 114 from one in Waco, Texas, and 90 from a tornado in Worcester, Mass. The toll from that season was so heavy that it prompted the federal government to help set up ground-based radar systems that allowed local weather forecasters to track storms across regions, rather than relying solely on observational reports from weather bureaus outside their areas.

Final numbers on tornadoes and deaths this year won't be available for months because early tallies include duplicate reports—and some unreported storms. NOAA officials warn that for now the tornado numbers will appear high until local weather forecasters can confirm the final count.

Droughts, famine, rotting crops, hurricanes, floods . . .

Warnings gone by unnoticed . . .

Many have forgotten the warnings from Heaven, for they go about saying, 'Where is the promise of His coming, and where are the warnings that you speak of and write of?"
   "O My children, you are truly blind! These warnings have been given for time, and an extension of time to mankind before the major catastrophe shall be sent upon you, the baptism of fire. You have received these warnings that have gone by unnoticed: floods, hurricanes, fires, disasters, accidents that are not accidents, earthquakes in places that have never experienced such terror before. How many warnings must the Eternal Father send upon mankind before they will awaken and do penance?

The Father plans a gradual cleansing of earth . . .
    Our Lady - "Intellectual pride, My children, has been the downfall of many. You will not enter the Kingdom unless you strip yourselves of this pride and return to Us as little children.
    "Sin and abominations have been accepted in your country and in the world as a way of life. Whatever shall We do with the souls who are coming fast over the veil unprepared? Whatever shall the Father do with them?"

There has not been one home on Long Island that had a crucifix on its door that did fall to any evil. I do not speak of the trees, My child; I speak of mankind. You see, My child, I set you down in that area to bring the word to mankind, and it was through these words that many listened and the passed through the horrible experience of a hurricane." Dear Bayside Shrine Workers,
A tornado passed through our town of Westlake, Louisiana early in the morning of January 13, 1995. No damage came to our house, but two trees fell down in my mother’s front yard. The electric light utility pole on my mother’s house broke during the storm, and a neighbor said he saw a big flash of fire spread right across the utility pole on to the top of my mother’s roof, but no damage came. The fire vanished almost immediately. My trailer was rocking with the wind, so was my grandmother’s trailer house, too, but no damage to either one of them. An electric fire also flashed over my grandmother’s trailer on the roof, but no damage.
My mother, my grandmother, and my sister--we all have blessed wooden crucifixes on the outside doors of our houses. We also have the blessed Rose Petals, the holy statues of Our Lady, and the Green Scapulars in our homes. We all give thanks to Our Lady of the Roses for sparing us any damages on our homes. Also, our Bayside group gets out the Bayside directives and the messages of Bayside in our area. We believe this work has spared our area from much disaster in the past of floods, tornadoes and storms.

Crucifixes on door saves H & H Store...
    On June 30, 1984, Jesus said: "And also, My children, I ask you again to place a crucifix upon your door. Both front and back doors must have a crucifix. I say this to you because there will be carnage within your areas, and this will pass you by if you keep your crucifix upon your doors."
    Let us now see the factual proof of Heaven’s protection, to those who follow Our Lady’s counsel. At a "Stop ‘n’ Go" shop at the corner of Jackson St. and Orange Ave. in Paramount, looters broke the windows and cleaned the store of $20,000 to $40,000 in merchandise, including freezers. One clerk there exclaimed, "Everything was taken!" Two weeks later it was just starting to reopen again to customers.
    Three blocks away, at the corner of Garfield Ave. and Alondra Blvd., was a different story. "H & H Store," also in Paramount, suffered six broken windows, not including the broken glass front door. Yet with this difference: Nothing was taken. Owner Juliette Cota gratefully affirmed, "Nothing taken! Not even a bar of soap!" A great mystery, considering several of the broken windows were large enough for the looters to easily pass through. So what was the difference? The owner had been warned by a local Bayside believer to put up a crucifix on the front door, and she did. A believer herself, she is now also telling others why her shop was spared. Her son, fearful of future riots, is desirous to sell the shop and move. Juliette, the mother and owner, confidently told us, "I am not afraid."

Dear Veronica,
    I sent you a picture that I feel is a miracle of Our Lady of the Roses. We have the picture, a beautiful statue of Our Lady of the Roses. On the outside, outdoors it is. As you know, we in Oakland, California, had a terrible disaster fire that destroyed 3,500 homes. I am enclosing this special statue picture. It was not touched by the fire, which destroyed all the homes in the block. I feel this is a precious moment and a photo of the power of the Virgin Mary of the Roses.
