Israel faces potential nuclear threat

BERLIN - Israel and the Mideast region are under a potential threat from nuclear weapons in Iraq and Iran, the chief adviser to Prime Minister-elect Ariel Sharon said in an interview in a German newspaper Friday.

The short-term danger was small "but we must not forget that Iraq and Iran are working hard on dangerous weapons," Zalman Shoval, 70, the former ambassador to the United States, told the mass-circulation Bild Zeitung.

He said the two countries were working on carrier systems and nuclear weapons, which represented a threat not only to Israel but to all other states in the region. However, Israel would defend itself "very effectively" if it was attacked, Shoval said.

When asked about Israel's future Palestinian policy, Sharon's adviser said, "We want to give the Palestinians an opportunity to conduct their own political, economic and cultural affairs." Whether this was possible in a state of their own, he said, would depend on the negotiations with the Palestinians. "Peace means security. If the Palestinians end the [current] violence, we can talk about everything," Shoval told the Bild Zeitung. However, he said that Jerusalem would remain the "undivided capital of Israel."

Shoval, who was due to hold talks with German government officials in Berlin later Friday, said, "Germany takes first place in Europe as far as we are concerned. It is very important to us that the German government and the public become acquainted with our policies."

Veronica - Yes, it is a, like a saber. Gee, it, it's a very strange-looking, dagger-like saber, with a cross on a handle. Like—it's not the kind that you see—it looks almost like Arabian or something. I can't explain it—like a very strange-looking Arabic, or something. I don't know where I have seen that before, but it's a very odd-looking type of dagger-like sword, with a hook on the end of it, though. That's strange.
