Solar flare goes off the
charts - Is this a sign of war?
Monday April 2 11:17 PM ET
BOULDER, Colo. (AP) - Forecasters said a solar flare Monday was the most intense they have seen in the current 11-year-solar cycle.
Space weather forecasters had to estimate its intensity, X-22 on a scale that only goes to 20, after sensors on a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration satellite could no longer measure it. They said the measurement could be off by plus or minus 2.
The flare caused static on radio frequency used to navigate boats and planes. Pilots in northern regions of the globe Monday were kept waiting for takeoff after the flare occurred at 5:52 p.m. EST, said NOAA space weather forecaster Craig Sechrest.
A solar flare is an eruption on the surface of the sun that releases radiation and particles toward the earth.
SEVERE SPACE WEATHER STORM - AURORA WIDESPREAD
A category G4 (severe) geomagnetic storm occurred during March 30 - 31. NOAA space weather forecasters reported that the storm began at 5:51 p.m. MST on March 30 (2001 31 March 0051 UTC) and quickly intensified to category G3 (strong) to G4 levels. A storm of this magnitude normally causes adverse effects on a number of systems including public power, gas and oil pipelines, satellite operations, high-frequency radio communications, and low-frequency radio navigation. The storm caused aurora displays that were seen as far south as Fort Davis, Texas and Fowlstown, Georgia; both at about 30 degrees North latitude. Reports of aurora were also received from other locations around the globe. The geomagnetic storm was related to major solar flare activity from a large, complex sunspot group currently making its way across the face of the Sun. The sunspot group, designated as Region 9393, has produced several major flares since March 29. Some of these flares have caused category R3 (strong) radio blackouts as well as a category S1 (minor) solar radiation storm. Forecasters expect Region 9393 to produce more major flares before it crosses to the far side of the Sun on April 5. NOAA forecasters also reported increased activity from beyond the Sun's southeast limb that may indicate the approach of another potent sunspot group.
After the huge solar eruptions, conditions were ripe for some extraordinary views of the Northern Lights. (Which weren't so northern any more!) Here are some images and comments.

Comments of people who saw this aurora borealis:
The sky is fantastic up here on the headwaters of the Missouri River tonight with all colors in all directions.
Hailing from southerly Ramona, California (at 33 degrees latitude, in the beautiful foothills east of San Diego)--I never thought I'd see the Aurora Borealis, but there it is, big, red streaked with gold. Thanks for telling me--I never would have gone out an looked!
I'm down here visiting family and friends and for the last fifteen minutes I have been eye witness to a faint red and green hue emanating from the northern sky. The lights seem to want to undulate from west to east and then seem to fade from time to time. Just thought I'd let you know. Kevin in San Juan, Puerto Rico
I am located about an hour north of Atlanta, Ga in Gainesville , GA. Took a look outside and to my surprise I saw the northern lights. A beautiful reddish glow with a thin line of green running through it. Just thought you should know its reaching way down south.
I am a 19 yr old from Central Illinois and the aurora is coming through great even in through ambient city lights, the whole sky here has a crimson glow with green and white highlights when you look straight up, in all my short life I have never seen such natural beauty.
I'm in southeast Florida and I can see this!!! It's in the northeastern sky, at first I thought it was lighting, but it's definitely not!
There are three huge red glowing shafts/streaks of light in the northern sky. Looks like a glow from some major fire storms. Thought you and your listeners would be interested in hearing the lights can be seen all the way down here in Phoenix AZ
I'm in the Northeast Heights of Albuquerque and the sky is a deep, crimson red north of the city. I've never seen northern lights before and I've never heard of them being seen this far south. We're at 35 degrees north latitude. What's happening?
World War II followed a great Aurora Borealis . . .
A great aurora borealis illuminated the skies of the world on January 25, 1938. Several weeks later, World War II began. This was the great sign foretold by the Virgin Mary to the three children at Fatima on July 13, 1917, indicating an eminent punishment of the world. What is in store for us?
The Bayside Prophecies say:
Prior Aurora Borealis . . .
There was a war . . .
Our Lady - "My children, I wish you to know
that you ignored a sign of a short few days ago. We sent from the heavens the
Aurora Borealis to shine unto men and let them know that when this happened
before, there was a war." (3-18-89)
Poem
message repeated on August 14, 1981
Remember to pray through '82
And never forget to wear your blue.
To guard your way and bless your home
When skies light up and oceans foam.
The nine line up on even course;
The flares emate with such great force,
The sun in turning will dance around
To panic souls upon the ground.
Floods, great heat, repeat anew:
The ones to be saved will be but a few.
He who defies the laws of God
Will find these tribulations hard.
