Half a million acres burn in West; Oregon firefighters dig in as temperatures soar...

Nearly 21,000 firefighters were struggling Thursday to stop the spread of some 42 wildfires ravaging a half-million acres over 10 states across the West.

Firefighters faced rough terrain and rattlesnakes as they battled in 100-degree heat Thursday to protect homes in the small Oregon town of Monument from one of the thousands of fires roaring across the West.
    The 12,000-acre blaze in northeastern Oregon's high desert burned within three miles of the ranching town, and officials feared it could draw near enough to spit embers onto rooftops. More than 700 firefighters had managed to hold off the flames, even as erratic winds occasionally whipped them into small tornados of fire.
    "We're doing OK for now," said firefighter Andy Parker, who was covered with soot and sweat. "But that can change in a minute. With fires you always have to wonder what it's going to do next."
    Clyde Zoeller, a spokesman at the firefighters' command post, said they were coping with harsh terrain and the danger of dehydration as they stood between the flames and the town of 27 homes and 150 people.
    "We've had problems with rattlesnakes and rocks rolling down the hill," he said. "You're losing water by the second. You can't drink enough water."
    The National Interagency Fire Center said 21,000 firefighters were battling 42 major fires; Oregon accounted for more than half of them, with 11 fires burning 270,000 acres.
    The West has seen about 2,200 new fires burn more than 640,000 acres since Saturday, an explosion of activity that prompted the fire center to issue its first Level Five alert of the year. That means firefighters are in danger of running out of people and equipment to fight fires.
    But the situation still appeared grim Thursday, with much of the focus on Monument and another ranching town in the northeastern part of the state, Ukiah. The Ukiah blaze nearly doubled in size overnight to 6,200 acres, closing U.S. Highway 395 to all but local traffic.
    Near Ashland, in southern Oregon, a fire crept through old-growth forest harboring seven sites inhabited by threatened northern spotted owls. Firefighters hoped to pinch off the head of the blaze in the next two days, said Marti Graham of the Oregon Department of Forestry.
    In Nevada, the Buffalo complex burned 74,000 acres near the town of Midas, where fire crews were stationed to protect the community.
    "It's burning all around this place," said Midas Saloon and Dinner House owner Les Matson. "The poor old cows will have a hell of a time finding something to eat."
