Pig-headed Virgin Statue Outrages Garden-goers...

A sculpture of a concrete pig's head atop the body of the Virgin Mary was beheaded by angry Christians in the Dunedin Botanic Garden at the weekend.

A couple were so incensed they took off the head and threw it into bushes nearby, artist Don Hunter said on Sunday.

"They felt it was offensive because of their religious beliefs."

His sculpture, Homo Scrofa, was part of a two-day exhibition by Otago Polytechnic fine arts students.

Mr Hunter said he made the sculpture to encourage debate on the genetic engineering of animals.

He and the couple resolved their differences after about 20 minutes' discussion.

Another protester, who declined to be named, earlier complained the sculpture was offensive and upsetting. He and his mother had seen it and wanted to know if Dunedin City Council knew an "offensive" item was being shown in a public area.

Mr Hunter said he was not upset by the criticism and had not intended to offend.

He likened the sculpture to a minotaur, the offspring of an illicit union between a Greek goddess and a bull. The plastic coat represented "sweating through our labours to correct any errors" that could be made through genetic engineering.

The already headless marble statue had been donated to the polytechnic about 10 years ago.

Polytechnic sculpture lecturer Peter Nicholls said it came from a cemetery and had never been a religious icon.

He likened the concerns from some people to those created in 1998 by reaction to Tania Kovats' Virgin in a Condom during Te Papa's Pictura Britannica exhibition.

That and Sam Taylor-Wood's Wrecked Last Supper, with a topless woman replacing Christ, sparked accusations of blasphemy from Christians and debate over freedom of expression.

Dunedin City Council community and recreation manager Mick Reece said he and gardens curator Alan Matchett discussed the exhibition with Mr Nicholls before it was set up.

"We have worked with Peter before and I have been happy to trust to his discretion and his experience. If we have caused any offence we are sorry," Mr Reece said.
