Adam and Eve: fact or fable?
“Adam was created in the image of God as man, and woman was given unto him as his helper. As such, My children, man must always be the head of the household. There shall not be strength in a home divided." - Our Lady, July 15, 1978
The world often cries
out, "Adam and Eve is just a nice old fable, you don't really believe it, do
you?" Remarkably, many Catholics, among them theologians, have given in to the
voice of the world, and allowed themselves to fall into disbelief. To some this
matter seems of little importance, but to the spiritual eye much is at stake in
the account of Adam and Eve, even the Roman Catholic Church itself. If you take
away Adam's existence, his fall from grace, his sin--original sin at that--you,
in turn, take away the need of mankind for redemption, undermine Christ's death
on the cross, thereby taking away the need for the Catholic Church. Without the
need of redemption, why would the world need a Church that claims to be the
dispenser of those graces Christ won for us via the sacraments? Questions such
as these, if answered wrongly, can lead to an emptiness and destruction of
faith, and to the raising of man as a god unto himself.
A good look at the account of Adam and Eve brings out a powerful army of
indispensable truths. The great evil of sin, original sin, redemption, our
descendency from Adam and Eve, God's mercy and justice, Mary's role as Mother,
Co-redemptress and as the Immaculate Conception, the existence of the Devil, The
institution of Marriage, the need for God's grace and other vitally important
teachings are denoted, either specifically or by implication in this account.
However, as important as these topics may be in this reflection, we will now
focus on the fact of the existence of Adam and Eve, their sin and its effects on
us all as divinely revealed in the Book of Genesis.
First of all, no matter what
modern man may say, there was a set of first parents, Adam and Eve, and that we
came from them is a reality that we need to believe. Clearly, Holy Scripture
tells us of Eve, "... She became the mother of all the living." (Gen 3:20) That
means of all of us! And the Book of Wisdom tells us Adam is the "first formed
father of the world." (Wis 10:1) Further, if one traces the genealogies as found
in chapters five and ten of Genesis, they will have to come to the conclusion
that we all came from Adam. To top this off, the authority of Holy Mother Church
is fully with us. In that great encyclical letter Humani Generis, Pope
Pius XII tells Catholics, "For the faithful cannot embrace that opinion which
maintains either that after Adam there existed on this earth true men who did
not take their origin through natural generation from him as from the first
parent of all, or that Adam represents a certain number of first parents."
Furthermore, both Pope Paul VI and Pope John Paul II have proclaimed the same
truth. Truly, how clearly these Holy Fathers have spelled it out: we all came
from Adam and Eve.
More troubling to many a modern man is the fact of sin, which he often seeks to
deny with all his heart. Psychologists, talk show hosts, and newspaper writers
cry out with an often too common voice: there is no sin, or they explain away
sin, or give a whole new nonsensical meaning to the word sin, as to take away
its true meaning. In spite of what the world may clamor, real sin is the great
act against right reason, against God which Adam and Eve sadly committed. In
their case it was with perfectly free will, full consent, and grave matter
thereby making it mortal. Scripture relates that the devil tempted Eve, saying,
"For God doth know that in what day soever you shall eat thereof, you eyes shall
be opened: and you shall be as gods..." (Gen 3:5) From there, the sacred writer
tells of the great fall, "And the woman saw that the tree was good to eat, and
fair to the eyes, and delightful to behold: and she took of the fruit thereof,
and did eat, and gave to her husband, who did eat." (Gen 3:6) Surely, this
eating of the forbidden fruit was an action which was the outcome of an interior
disposition of rebellion against God's will. God had commanded Adam and Eve, "Of
every tree of paradise thou shalt eat. But of the tree of knowledge of good and
evil thou shalt not eat. For in what day soever thou shalt eat of it, thou shalt
die the death." (Gen 2:16-17) By this defiance of God's holy order, sin, "the
knowledge of good and evil," had entered the world. As St. Paul tells us, "For
as by the disobedience of one man, many were made sinners..." (Rm 5:19) and,
"Wherefore as by one man sin entered into this world, and by sin death; and so
death passed upon all men, in whom all have sinned." (5:12)
All nature rebelled and groaned at such a sight as sin and became permanently wounded. Adam and Eve received the death penalty; they would have to die the death, they lost their original holiness and justice, they lost sanctifying grace--God's life in their souls--and the gates of paradise closed on them. Genesis describes some of the results of this tragedy. To the woman God said: "I will multiply thy sorrows, and thy conceptions: in sorrow shalt thou bring forth children." (Gen 3:16) To Adam God said, "...cursed is the earth of thy work: with labor and toil shalt thou eat thereof all the days of thy life." (Gen 3:17) And God told of death, "...for dust thou art, and into dust thou shalt return." (Gen 3:19) And further along the Scripture trail it is related, "And the Lord God sent him out of the paradise of pleasure...." (Gen 3:23)
Fortunately, God in His great mercy forgave Adam's sin, but in His justice He
was to allow the consequences of that sin to live on and, in fact, be passed on
to future generations. This sin we inherit from Adam is called original sin and
we are all infected with it from the moment of conception, until we are cleansed
by the waters of Baptism. The Church's new catechism states, "Revelation gives
us the certainty of faith that the whole of human history is marked by the
original fault freely committed by our first parents."
Pope Pius XII expressed
the truth about original sin, proclaiming with the Church's authority,
"...original sin, which proceeds from a sin actually committed by an individual
Adam and which through generation is passed on to all and is in everyone as his
own." Again, Pius XII leaves no room for doubt.
For us, the account of
Adam and Eve, the account of original sin found in the Book of Genesis, alone
solves many of the riddles in our lives. Such questions as "why do we often fall
into evil?" and "why is this beautiful world of ours a valley of tears?" are
answered. This account gives us consolation and hope in the fact that we have a
merciful God who will accept us with all our limitations and help us overcome
them with His grace.
However, for many a modern man this news is too much to bear. In his pride, he wants to be his own god, a superman to go wherever, whenever, and do whatever he pleases. Therefore, deaf to the voice of Holy Mother Church, mankind, in general, is being led down that same dark, slippery path by that same serpent thousands of years ago: "... and you shall be as gods..." (Gen 3:5)
"And shout it from the rooftops that man of science is wasting his time seeking life on another planet. There is no life! Were it not so, the Eternal Father would have given you prophets to write down and discourse with you upon this life. The first man and woman created were Adam and Eve, and all descended from them." - Our Lady, July 25, 1978
Our Lady of the Roses awesome Bayside Prophecies... http://www.tldm.org/../Bayside/ These prophecies came from Jesus, Mary, and the saints to Veronica Lueken at Bayside, NY, from 1968 to 1995.
YOUR FIRST
PARENTS
"There are no gods, My children, upon your earth. There is but one God. You
have set up many gods to worship upon your earth, even seeking to make man a
god. Can you not remember how the gates of Heaven were closed to you? Why?
Because of pride and arrogance and listening to the voice of evil. Your
first parents, My children, listened to this voice and fell and succumbed to
the evil.
"I understand, My children; I know what lies in the hearts of mankind.
They do not give your children the knowledge of your first parents, Adam and
Eve. They do not give your children the knowledge of the existence of hell.
Can you not understand, My children, why? Without this knowledge they shall
sin, and sin shall become a way of life." - Our Lady, December 24, 1975
THE FALL
"Because My Son died, My children, upon His cross, He opened the gates of
Heaven that were shut to mankind at the fall of the first parents. He died
for mankind, but shall those who reject Him by sin and breaking the
Commandments of the Eternal Father, without penance, enter? No! Sadly, My
child, My children, they cannot enter." - Our Lady, January 31, 1976
HUMAN NATURE
"Human nature, My child, sets man on the path to sin. He can overcome this
sin by staying with My Son, close to My Son in the tabernacles of the world.
Unless you eat of His Body and drink of His Blood, you cannot have the light
within you, for it is His Body that is food for your soul." - Our Lady, June
18, 1974
ADAM AND EVE
"We are not bargaining now to save the human skin, My child and My children,
the bodies. We are here to reclaim the souls. Life goes on beyond the veil,
and all of you-who among you can say that one day or night you will not be
here on earth, but must be taken from the world? And taken does not mean the
body, it means the spirit, the soul-the everlasting miracle of life that the
Eternal Father extended to you all after the tumultuous time when Adam and
Eve were created. As they walked over the garden given to them, often called
the Garden of Eden, sin then became a way of life. It matters not whether
you have committed one sin or many, your punishment shall be meted
accordingly.
"My child and My children, My Mother has cried endlessly, hoping that Her
children would only offer Her a small measure of satisfaction that Her work
is being with good fruits-producing good fruits, My child.
"Yes, My child and My children, My Mother has meant to preserve you upon
earth without hurt, without suffering, but this cannot be. The sin of Adam
and Eve was so great that it has placed man upon the earth to suffer. But
once you have learned, My child and My children, the true value of suffering
you will understand that through this suffering, accepted in good spirit and
with firm meaning as reparation for the souls in purgatory, the Eternal
Father shall bless anew those who have given themselves as victims, victims
offered to the Immaculate Heart of My Mother." - Jesus, May 28, 1983
ALL DESCENDED
"And shout it from the rooftops that man of science is wasting his time
seeking life on another planet. There is no life! Were it not so, the
Eternal Father would have given you prophets to write down and discourse
with you upon this life. The first man and woman created were Adam and Eve,
and all descended from them." - Our Lady, July 25, 1978
HIS HELPER
"Paul the Apostle wrote down the words given to him by My Son, Jesus. Adam
was created in the image of God as man, and woman was given unto him as his
helper. As such, My children, man must always be the head of the household.
There shall not be strength in a home divided." - Our Lady, July 15, 1978
IMAGE OF YOUR
GOD
"My
children upon earth, you are complete descendants from the Eternal Father.
You descended from the first created beings upon earth, known to you as Adam
and Eve. As such you have been created in the image of your God, and as such
you must go forth upon earth in your lifetime, being a credit to the Eternal
Father." - Our Lady, June 18, 1979
