Former members of Russia's military, secretly working as middlemen between Iran and North Korea, are helping Tehran acquire missile technology that will enable the Islamic republic to strike the capitals of Europe.

The technology, Western intelligence analysts believe, will be sufficient for Iran to develop a missile with a range of 2,200 miles while carrying a 1.2-ton payload – enough to deliver a nuclear weapon to most of Europe.

An unnamed senior U.S. official told the London Telegraph that Tehran's missile program is "sophisticated and getting larger and more accurate. They have had very much in mind the payload needed to carry a nuclear weapon.

"I think Putin knows what the Iranians are doing," he added.

The revelation follows yesterday's rebuff of U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice by Russia's President Vladimir Putin. Moscow officials indicated they would not support a U.S. initiative to refer Iran to the U.N. Security Council over its suspected nuclear weapons program.

Russia is heavily involved in development of Iran's nuclear power program – a program the U.S. says is being used as cover for weapons development. Iran has refused to suspend uranium enrichment or to allow U.N. inspections of its facilities.

According to this latest information, Tehran is getting similar – though secret – help for its missile program from former Russian military personnel who are acting as go-betweens on a deal struck in 2003 between North Korea and Iran.

Top secret missile technology, it is believed, is being channeled to Tehran through Russia. Production facilities, diagrams and operating instructions that would allow the Iranians to build the missiles, as well as liquid propellant and assistance by experts has been provided by the Russians.

U.S. ambassador to the U.N. John Bolton warned that Iran is "determined to get nuclear weapons deliverable on ballistic missiles. It can then use to intimidate not only its own region but possibly to supply to terrorists."

Already, Iran's Shahab 3, with a range of 800 miles, is capable of hitting Israel. With North Korean technology, that range is extended to Rome, Berlin and much of France. In addition, North Korea has reportedly modified its Taepo Dong 2 – a weapon-delivery system capable of reaching the U.S. west coast – for launch from land-based transporters and is smuggling this technology into Iran using it's clandestine Russian connection.
