Ex-gays protest APA claim that homosexuality is irreversible...

Pro-family groups, including several ex-homosexuals, demonstrated outside an annual convention of the American Psychological Association (APA) to protest the group’s contention that homosexuality is irreversible.
Alan Chambers, president of Exodus International, a ministry to homosexuals and ex-homosexuals, was among the 50 or so protesters present Friday in New Orleans. “The fact of the matter is that there are tens of thousands of men and women just like me who have overcome homosexuality . . . We’re living proof,” he commented to Baptist Press.
The group is protesting the APA’s refusal to admit that homosexuality is a reversible condition. The APA removed homosexuality from the list of recognized mental disorders (DSM) in 1973. A paper by a leading psychiatrist published earlier this year emphasizes that gay advocacy groups were responsible for the APA’s abandonment of scientific accuracy and authentic research in order to support the political goals of the homosexual community.
Activists within the APA combined forces with gay organizations to present to the APA incomplete and biased research supporting the “normalcy” of homosexuality that neglected to analyze the data or offer any challenge, according to a paper by Dr. Jeffrey Satinover. A statement on the APA’s website states that homosexuality “does not require treatment and is not changeable.”
The APA updated a so-called fact sheet on homosexuality in 2000, repudiating the benefits of reparative therapy that has helped thousands of persons with homosexual tendencies to end their destructive lifestyles. The sheet, called “Homosexual and Bisexual Issues,” dismisses the noted success of reparative therapy saying that it works only “for some motivated individuals for limited periods of time,” and “such changes often are accompanied by depression, anxiety and other symptoms.”
Nada Stotland, head of the APA’s joint committee on public affairs disparaged reparative therapy in 1998: “The very existence of therapy that is supposed to change people’s sexuality, even for people who don’t take it, is harmful because it implies that they have a disease.”
Focus on the Family Research Analyst Caleb Price, a former homosexual and also present at the protest in New Orleans, described the APA position as hypocritical. “If they are about science and not about politics, then they should be willing to look at issues involving homosexuality … in an intellectually honest way,” he said.
