Bishops of Connecticut: Are you willing to risk murder?...

The following excerpts are from a phone conversation with a noted pro-life priest, who is also a canon lawyer. I asked if, according to Church law, the Connecticut bishops have been automatically excommunicated by their material cooperation in the sin of abortion (Canons 1329 and 1398), by their mandating the abortifacient Plan B in rape cases within their Catholic hospitals. That this act has made the Connecticut bishops accomplices, without whose help the crime would not have been committed. The following is this priest’s response to my question: 

If you deny the Faith, you are automatically excommunicated.  

With bishops, we’re not talking about someone who is ignorant. So you can safely presume that they have been excommunicated. They know it, and God knows it.   

The only way they could avoid it would be if they were somehow ignorant. It may be partial ignorance. But a man who is intelligent enough to become a priest and then a bishop should be able to put together a very simple guideline that if you are hunting bear in the bushes, it could be a bear, or it could be a person. And if you shoot and you kill someone, you are guilty of manslaughter. Even in civil law there is punishment for this. 

Another example: If there was a box of breakfast cereal and some scientists argue it is poison, and some say it is not poison, are you going to give this cereal to your children? 

You cannot take action in cases of uncertainty, like the Connecticut bishops have taken.[1] So the question to the bishops is: Are you going to risk murder? 

No one seems to be bringing up this issue. Even the “good guys”, if they are good guys. This simple fact. Unless people are willfully blind. 

And anyone who says “the poor bishops, that they didn’t know”, it seems that the bishops should have contacted the Vatican about this. 

(Mentioning the ominous similarities to King Henry VIII vs. the Catholic bishops of his day, Father responded): 

St. Thomas More would not have died if the English bishops would have backed him up. Here’s a layman that died because his bishops would not back him up. They are moving ahead right on schedule just like in history. It won’t be Henry VIII, but it will be someone else. We’re definitely going in that direction. You can be sure that American blood will be shed on American soil over the Catholic Faith. 

The Connecticut politicians, they beat the bishops. They made them blink. 

I fear that if a vote were made today, the great majority of U.S. bishops would go along with the Connecticut bishops. 

There will be a persecution.

Brazil Bishop: Excommunication for those who use or distribute morning after pill...

Brazilian Archbishop Jose Cardoso Sobrinho has condemned a plan by Recife city officials to distribute the morning-after pill during the upcoming Carnival festival and has warned that those who use the pill are subject to excommunication.

"This policy is wicked and immoral, and in this case, both those who use it and those who incite its use are committing a crime punishable by excommunication," Archbishop Cardoso said.

The Archbishop also noted that distribution of the abortifacient pill "is aberrant and illegal," since abortion is illegal in Brazil.

The Archbishop's stand against this "aberrant and illegal" plan may fly in the face of government initiatives, but falls in line with the opinions of most Brazilian citizens.

A new poll carried out by the Datafolha firm in Brazil has revealed that 87% of Brazilians think that having an abortion is "morally wrong," and that less than 1% of those surveyed approve of abortion for any reason.

"The result of the research is a cold shower for the pro-abortion strategy of Health Minister Jose Gomes Temporao and shows a clear tendency that we have seen in recent polls. The government's pro-abortion campaigns are at odds with the real Brazil," said Carlos Alberto di Franco, professor of Journalistic Ethics at the University of Navarra in Brazil.

"Brazilians are against abortion. It's not just an opinion, it is a fact statistically measured in an opinion poll. Only because of this does the government move more slowly. There are moral issues that go beyond mere statistics; but the legalization of abortion, today and right now, would be a completely anti-democratic act," Di Franco added.

Recife, with a population of about 1.4 million, hosts one of Brazil's most colorful and frenzied carnivals. According to Mayor Joao Paulo Lima e Silva the morning-after-pills will not be given out wantonly, but rather for cases of rape and broken condoms.

Bishop Antonio Augusto Dias Duarte of the Life and Family Commission of the National Conference of Brazilian Bishops said, "The church has nothing against having fun during carnival, but the banalization of human sexuality is something we cannot tolerate. It will only serve to diminish inhibitions and encourage orgiastic behavior. Though the pill is marketed as a contraceptive, critics say it prompts abortion. The church opposes both."

Bishop Duarte also criticized the federal government's plan to distribute millions of condoms nationwide during the festivities, ostensibly to help fight AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases in the world's largest Roman Catholic country.

Honduran Bishops Warn "Morning After" Pill is Grounds For Excommunication...

The Catholic bishops of Honduras have denounced a campaign to distribute the "morning-after" pill in their country, and warned the faithful that complicity in abortion is grounds for excommunication.

In a joint public statements, the Honduran bishops said that the morning-after pill "is abortifacient, since it deliberately and directly ends the life of a human being immediately after conception." The bishops add that "abortion is an abominable crime."

In the statement on church moral teaching, that could be applied to Catholics anywhere in the world, the bishops state, "It is not possible to be living members of the Body of Christ, the Church, and also to be accomplices in abortion. Those who are involved are offending the God of life, and cutting themselves off from communion with the Body of Christ."

Pope Benedict XVI warned against dispensing drugs that have the goal of preventing the implantation of the human embryo: "It is not possible to anesthetize the conscience, for example, when it comes to molecules whose aim is to stop an embryo implanting or to cut short someone's life... I invite your federation [of pharmacists] to consider conscientious objection which is a right that must be recognized for your profession so you can avoid collaborating, directly or indirectly, in the supply of products which have clearly immoral aims, for example abortion or euthanasia..."

On June 5, 1987, Pope John Paul II warned clergy and theologians of their grave obligation to faithfully transmit the Church’s teaching on contraception:  “A grave responsibility derives from this: those who place themselves in open conflict with the law of God, authentically taught by the Church, guide spouses along a false path. The Church’s teaching on contraception does not belong to the category of matter open to free discussion among theologians. Teaching the contrary amounts to leading the moral consciences of spouses into error.”

On September 17, 1983, Pope John Paul II told priests in Rome that “contraception is to be judged objectively so profoundly unlawful as never to be, for any reason, justified. Asked what he would do if pushed on the issue by the state, Bishop Sheridan indicated that he would likely rather have the Church pull out of hospitals than compromise the faith.  "If I personally were being pushed on this and had to make the decision by myself, I'd have to question whether or not we could continue that particular ministry if the state were going to force us to act contrary to Catholic teaching, to the Catholic conscience," he told LifeSiteNews.com.

     Bishop Sheridan concluded, "How could you continue to call yourself Catholic if you were doing things that were contrary to Catholic teaching even if you were being forced by the state to do them?"

The truth is that there is absolutely no doubt about how the Plan B pills work. Just ask the manufacturer, Barr Pharmaceuticals, whose product insert states: "This product works mainly by preventing ovulation (egg release). It may also prevent fertilization of a released egg (joining of sperm and egg) or attachment of a fertilized egg to the uterus (implantation)." (My italics.) It's that third item that makes Plan B an abortion-causing drug. The same can be said for every chemical contraceptive.
