Pope Benedict XVI: 'Marriage is not a Right'; Urges Priests to Screen Couples More Carefully...

NY Daily News reported on January 22, 2011:

In a speech to the Vatican tribunal that decides annulments, Pope Benedict XVI told priests to do a better job at screening who they let tie the knot and to spend more time counseling couples away from splitting.

In a message some observers thinks was directed at the U.S., where the divorce rate continues to rise, he said better pre-marriage counseling and time spent with husband and wives to be could help weed out who might not be ready for a trip down the aisle.

And if priests don't think a couple should tie the knot, there's no reason that church officials have to allow it, the Pope added.

"No one can make a claim to the right to a nuptial ceremony," he said.

In 2006, the United States had more annulment cases than the rest of the world combined.

"The church and society at large place too much importance on the good of marriage and the family founded on it to not make a profound commitment to it pastorally," he said.

The comments came on the same day Benedict XVI took what many believe was a shot at Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, who is in hot water for alleged relations with underage prostitutes, the Daily Telegraph reported.

Without mentioning the notorious playboy by name, Benedict XVI told an audience with police officers that public officials should "rediscover their singular and moral roots."

Italian investigators accused Berlusconi of paying for sex last year with a then 17-year-old and housing girls in rent-free apartments.

He has denied the accusations - but the Pope - along with most of Italy -- didn't really seem to buy that.

"The singular vocation that the city of Rome requires today of you, who are public officials, is to offer a good example of the positive and useful interaction between a healthy lay status and the Christian faith," he said.

There will be no rationalization of adultery, there will be no rationalization of the breaking up of the home in divorce.
