Biblical Discipline in the Carlisle Indian Boarding Schools...

Dear Sir,
I have attached some photographs from the Carlisle Indian Boarding School which date from the late 1890s and early 1900s. I know that you admire some of those who hold the Protestant faith, although we must pray that they return to the True Faith. The Carlisle school was a Protestant school and established along with other Protestant and Catholic institutions to bring Christian civilization to Indian children and thus make them useful members of society. These schools were started after the Indians had been brought under control and were living in reservations. The Carlisle school in Pennsylvania was started by Colonel Pratt, a military man.The children who came to the Carlisle school had never been disciplined as Indian parents allow them to run wild. As we see they were dressed in rags on arrival with poor hygiene standards. The second photograph shows the same group of children after only 5 months training. The difference is quite staggering. The school was the run on a military basis with military discipline and regimentation.
The day started with drill exercises and the children were marched to and from each activity. As you can see in the group photographs, boys want military style uniforms and the girls long Victorian style dresses with good strong leather ankle boots. The girls had their hair cut short for reasons of hygiene but also to prevent vanity. Apparently these girls were very vain about the length of their hair. When we look at these group photo graphs we can only marvel at the achievements of their teachers. Other photographs show the girls doing their drill exercises and once more we can see how well disciplined they were. The classroom scenes give us the impression of a system where there was frequent testing and learning by rote. In one photograph children line up to be examined by a mistress holding a rod. In another we see mistress a young girl being questioned by a severe looking school mistress, perhaps because she seems to have got her dress dirty. One can imagine this young "lady" got a taste of the rod for her carelessness. In other photographs we can see these girls being taught the value of hard work and learning how to iron clothes under supervision. In the schools the Indian girls were trained to work as domestic servants and the boys to work as laborers. They were very popular with settler families due to the training and discipline they had received.
Biblical discipline with rod was the main form of punishment used. These schools were similar to the industrial schools in Europe and elsewhere and to the industrial schools in the United States for white children. Of course the regime was harder because of the background of the children.
The Holy Bible on Child Discipline...
"He that loveth his son, frequently chastiseth him, that he may rejoice in his latter end, and not grope after the doors of his neighbors." (Ecclesiasticus 30:1)
"A horse not broken becometh stubborn, and a child left to himself will become headstrong." (Ecclesiasticus 30:8)
"Give him not liberty in his youth, and wink not at his devices. Bow down his neck while he is young, and beat his sides while he is a child, lest he grow stubborn, and regard thee not, and so be a sorrow of heart to thee." (Ecclesiasticus 30:11-12)
"He who spareth the rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him correcteth him betimes." (Proverbs 13:24)
"Withhold not correction from a child: for if thou striketh him with a rod he shall not die. Thou shalt beat him with a rod, and deliver his soul from hell." (Proverbs 23:13-14)
Note: The failure of a parent to correct a child for serious wrongs is objectively a mortal sin. In Examination of Conscience for Adults: A Guide to Spiritual Progress, Fr. Donald F. Miller lists as a mortal sin, "Have I failed to correct and punish my children for serious wrongs, or to forbid them to enter serious occasions of sin?" (p. 77, +Imprimatur: Archbishop Moses E. Kiley, May 12, 1942). As Fr. Louis Colin emphasizes, "Who loves much, chastises much." (Love One Another, p. 189)
