Police are investigating a mysterious "large fireball falling to the earth" spotted in Salem, Oregon, in the southwest of Polk County.

The fiery trail was reported by a local resident around 4:50 p.m. (local time) on Thursday, according to Lt. Dustin Newman, a spokesman for the Polk County Sheriff's Office (PCSO), the Statesman Journal reports.

The incident was reported as a plane crash but its exact location remains undetermined, according to the PCSO, which posted images of the sighting on its official Facebook page.

"PCSO is currently investigating a large fireball falling to the earth in the southwest area of Polk County. The fireball was reported as a plane crash and PCSO is working to locate a possible landing location and exactly what the fireball is," the PCSO said on its official Facebook page.

"After the 911 call came we were able to get a helicopter in the area (as it is pretty remote) and they didn't see anything of concern. There were no reports of downed aircraft either. We really believe it was a meteor as yesterday there was a somewhat rare meteor shower in our area as well," Sheriff Mark Garton from the PCSO told Newsweek.

"The exact location of the fireball is unknown. PCSO will utilize aircraft during daylight hours tomorrow [Friday] in an attempt to cover the rough terrain in the area and wrap up the search. PCSO has utilized all available aviation tracking systems and no planes have been lost," the PCSO said on Facebook.

The Federal Aviation Administration has yet to report any plane crashes in the area, while several national and local authorities, including the U.S. Forest Service, a Life Flight Network helicopter and a local timber company, are working together to determine the origin of the fireball, Newman confirms, the Salem Statesman Journal reports.

The American Meteor Society (AMS) and NASA's Center for Near Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) have also yet to report fireballs in the area.

Speculation over the origins of the latest sighting has been building, with several theories posted on social media, ranging from it being a meteoroid or jet trail to a missile.

"I'm thinking it's the light from the sunset reflecting off a cloud or jet trail," noted user Sarah Werner, which could be a possibility, according to the AMS.

"The AMS and its international partners receive an average of 20,000 fireball reports every year. For the vast majority, these reports come from people who don't have any knowledge about meteors or general astronomy. As a result, we regularly receive reports that aren't related to fireballs or meteors but rather to the sun reflecting on contrails (short for 'condensation trails,')" the AMS notes on its official website.

"Contrails are the linear clouds etched across the skies by high-altitude airplanes. At sunset and sunrise, the sun light often gives warm tones (red, orange and yellow) that some people may mistake for an astronomical event," it adds.

"I wonder if it's a meteoroid we're supposed to have a shower tonight [Thursday]," wrote user Cheyanne Cody on the PCSO Facebook page.

"It looks like space junk, I've seen it before usually a big ball of fire with a purple tail," another user Elizabeth Yon commented, which could be another possibility.

Back in July, a large fireball was spotted shooting across the South Florida sky, which was reported to be space debris by the AMS, WPTV West Palm Beach reported.

"Hey Polk Co. Sheriff, We saw it from our house in Estacada. My wife made a comment that it looked like a missile launch. Our house is at 2000ft in the foot hills," wrote user Tami Bailey.

"Fireballs and bolides are astronomical terms for exceptionally bright meteors that are spectacular enough to be seen over a very wide area," notes the CNEOS.

"Fireballs are very impressive and beautiful. They look like a huge (sometimes gigantic) shooting star," notes the AMS. "If you had enough time to grab your phone to take a picture, it is certainly NOT a fireball. Fireballs usually only last few seconds. Longer fireballs are extremely rare."

If there were clouds above the sighting, "it is certainly NOT a fireball (meteoroids glow usually as soon as they hit Earth's atmosphere and they entirely burn up between 60 miles – 100 km and 40 miles – 70km – the highest clouds can be found at 8 miles above the Earth' surface)," according to the AMS.

Newsweek has contacted the AMS and CNEOS for a comment and further insight on the fireball sighting in Oregon.

The latest incident is not the only fireball sighting in recent weeks. Earlier this month, one was also reported in Missouri, according to an official report by the AMS.

"The AMS has received over 300 reports so far about of a bright fireball seen above Missouri on Monday, November 11th 2019 around 8:52pm (Nov. 12th 02:54 Universal Time). The event was mainly seen from the Missouri but we also received reports from Indiana, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, Nevada, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Wisconsin," the AMS reports.

An exaggerated form of the star...
Veronica - Right now I see a large star up above the tall tree at the right side of the banner. Now this star is growing very large, an exaggerated form of the star. But oh, I can see why because the star now is covering the whole area of the trees, beyond the trees and down towards us; it seems to be increasing in velocity or whatever you want to call I it, this expansion of the star. A Star shall be sent upon you...
Veronica - Jesus says to watch carefully. I see what appears to be a huge star. It looks like a star. I'm not familiar with them. I know it's something celestial. A huge star - and it's coming over very fast across the sky.
    Now I see another star. It looks like the moon - not a star - the moon. And I see this star - or this round - it's got a lot of rings around it: It's a huge body with the rings around it. I don't know what that is - a star? Planet? And it seems to be going crazy. It's jumping up and down and jiggling, going back and forth. And now, all of a sudden, it's shooting out, right into space and it's heading over across the sky. Oh! If it keeps going it's going to bump into the moon! Oh, my goodness! Oh!
    It looks like - this thing - this star just seemed to come from out of nowhere. It seemed to have shot right out into space and it's heading for, it looks like the moon. yes.
    And now as it's getting closer I notice it's very red. It's no longer white. It looked white before but now it looks very red. And, oh, my goodness! It looks like the ball again! Oh, my goodness! It's red and orange. It looks - from here now - very hot. I can see it very closely. Oh, my!
    And now it's going past the moon. No, it's not hitting the moon. But it looks like it's heading for the sun! Oh, my goodness! It looks like...It looks like two big balls; like two suns in the sky. Oh, my goodness! Oh!

The Ball of Redemption a supernatural manifestation...

The Chastisement from Heaven...
Veronica - I see a large ball of fire. It's traveling very fast. It's growing larger as it's coming closer. As it comes.. as it's twirling through the space I see there are stars falling...I think they're stars. There are stars falling about it. And the ball is very hot now; it's moving very fast. It's now going over behind the moon. The moon now looks green on one side. Part of it seems to be melting. Oh. It's twirling very fast, over on the right side; it's like a burning star. It looks almost like the fourth of July; like a sparkler, only very red and orange.
    Now as it comes closer it's very, very hot. The ball looks white, like white heat. Now also something is breaking away from...it's like chunks of breaking rock and heat. (3-27-73)

Beyond the farthest star...
Our Lady of the Roses - "Out in your world, beyond the farthest star visible to man's eyes is the instrument planned by the Father for your chastisement. Pray! Pray, My children, a constant vigilance of prayer now until the moment of darkness." (6-16-73)

The Ball of Fire...
Veronica - Now Jesus is pointing up to the sky. Oh, He wants me to - oh, there's that Ball again! That! oh, it's very large. It's a ball of fire, and it has a - oh, I can see the tail very clearly now. It's a long, orange tail. It's really a fiery red. It's very, very hot - looking. Now that - it's really hurtling through the sky; it's just - zing, like that. (12-29-73)

Scientists will not stop the Ball...
Jesus - "Many warnings have been given to mankind, and they pass by unnoticed and rejected. Scientists with all of their explanations for the catastrophe set upon mankind! Will your men of science find a way to stop the Ball of Redemption? I say unto you: No! for the Eternal Father shall guide that ball!" (5-30-78)

Soon the earth will shake, houses will crumble and fall...
Our Lady of the Roses - "Parents, reject now your worldly pursuits for power, moneys, material gatherings. They are worthless! For soon the earth will shake, houses will fall and crumble, gold and silver shall be melted in the tremendous heat of the Ball of Redemption. They will be naught to you all, as nothing to mankind.
    "Your only covering shall be prayers and your acts of sacrifice. So gather now your treasures for Heaven, for everything upon earth shall be leveled!" (5-30-78)

Two suns on your horizon...
Jesus - "It is a sad fact, but one that cannot be escaped, but held in abeyance by the prayers and acts of atonement of the few - it is a sad fact that two great penances shall be set upon mankind: a scourge of war and the Ball of Redemption. How soon, you ask? Does it matter when a time? Are you prepared now? It will fast come upon you unexpectedly.
    "There shall appear two suns on your horizon. Fear shall grip the hearts of many, and this fear shall come from the knowledge that you rejected the warnings from Heaven and did not act upon them." (12-7-76)

Scientists don't want to frighten mankind...
On June 18, 1991 Jesus said; "My child and My children, you will keep a constant vigilance of prayer going throughout your world, because, I repeat again, near the throne of the Eternal Father, He views a ball so immense, so beyond all mans speculation, that it will destroy over three-quarters of the earth. It is in your atmosphere. It has been noticed by few, but the few seek not to bring fear to the hearts of mankind. They do not know that it is the Eternal Father who now will guide that Ball."

Punishment will be given in 3 stages:
Jesus - "A PUNISHMENT upon an unrepentant generation...This punishment will be given in stages:

1. Internal - Man's own creation.
2. The Second from the elements.
3. The Third from the constellations to fall upon you - to fall upon you - to be planet struck - the Ball of Redemption. (2-1-73)

Crucifix upon their doors...
Veronica - I see a road. I see people fleeing, their clothes are ragged. It seems as though they had been hit by some kind of shrapnel, or something that's tearing the clothes off their bodies. But the worst part of all is that beyond the roads I see bodies, dead bodies strewn all over, in the streets, through the houses, in the lots. And I see the waters aflame. And I see waters churning and churning, and rising higher and higher, as they wash onto the shores that border the seas.
    Jesus - "Yes, My child, in the great Chastisement a ball of fire shall fall into the waters killing all that is living in the seas. And, also, unfortunately, because they could not listen and change their ways, many will die also from the flames and also from the waters. Those living along the coastlines, We caution them to keep a sacramental and a crucifix upon their doors, for the angel of death shall not enter your home." (7-1-85)
