If you were wondering why you have heard so much about Russia’s collapse and how Ukraine is winning the war, a new report from a journalism watchdog has the answer.

The media narrative on the war in Ukraine against Russia is set by the same donor class which benefits from wars.

According to a June 30 report by Fairness and Accuracy In Reporting (FAIR), titled “How the Military-Industrial Complex Sets the Media Narrative on Ukraine” – “Wealthy donors have long funded think tanks with official-sounding names that produce research that reflects the interests of those funders…”

This “research” is what sets the agenda for what we know as “the news.”

Major outlets

Citing a report by The Quincy Institute, whose start-up funding was curiously provided by both George Soros and Charles Koch, the report considered 11 months of war reporting from major mainstream outlets.

The New York Times, the Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal were found to be “…seven times more likely to cite think tanks with war industry ties than they were to cite think tanks without war industry ties.”

NATO, Pentagon, Raytheon

The top two think tanks cited in these news outlets were the Atlantic Council and the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). As FAIR noted:

Both of these think tanks receive millions from the war industry. The Atlantic Council has long been the brain trust of NATO, the military organization whose expansion towards Russia’s borders was a critical factor in Russia’s decision to invade Ukraine.

Both think tanks receive hundreds of thousands of dollars from Raytheon and Lockheed Martin, companies which have already been awarded billions of dollars in Pentagon contracts as a result of the war in Ukraine.

The New York Times itself published an expose of the agenda of the CSIS. Published in 2016, it showed that CSIS “initiated meetings with Defense Department officials and congressional staff to push for the recommendations…”

Which “recommendations”? Those it received from the military industry which funds CSIS. The New York Times found that the purpose of this think tank was largely to produce content which matched the sales objectives of its sponsors.

As a think tank, the Center for Strategic and International Studies did not file a lobbying
report, but the goals of the effort were clear.

‘Political obstacles to export,’ read the agenda of one closed-door ‘working group’
meeting organized by Mr. Brannen that included Tom Rice, a lobbyist in General
Atomics’s Washington office, on the invitation lists, the emails show.

Boeing and Lockheed Martin, drone makers that were major C.S.I.S. contributors, were
also invited to attend the sessions, the emails show. The meetings and research
culminated with a report released in February 2014 that reflected the industry’s priorities.

The 2016 article also noted that “… defense contracting giants like Lockheed Martin and Boeing have cumulatively donated at least $77 million since 2010 to two dozen think tanks.”

This was almost 13 million dollars a year in the early to mid 2010s. How much are they spending now? No one knows, because there is no legal obligation to tell you.

As the author of the FAIR report Ben Freeman said, “Think tanks are not required to disclose their funders.”

In fact, according to Freeman, “many think tanks list donors without indicating the amount of donations and others just list donors in ranges (e.g., $250,000 to $499,999).”

It is therefore impossible to know exactly how much money these think tanks are getting. We simply cannot know who precisely is sponsoring the “news” you are served.

How war news is made

The study did not aim to demonstrate that the Ukraine narrative was shaped as an advertisement for the military industrial complex. Yet it furnished plenty of evidence to make that case compelling.

“Funders,” Freeman wrote, “are able to influence think tank work through the mechanisms of censorship, self-censorship, and perspective filtering.”

As The New York Times itself reported in 2016, this means that any voice expressing unwelcome messaging about selling the war will simply not be supported.

Yet researchers at think tanks are seeing corporate influence firsthand. Rachel Stohl, a
senior associate at the Stimson Center in Washington, said she had been quizzed by
potential donors as she tried to raise money for research on the military’s use of armed
drones.

‘Are you going to say drones are bad?’ she recalled one potential financial backer
asking. ‘We are not interested in funding something that says drones are bad.’

The influence of the war industry’s selective funding has far more serious consequences than those on the careers of skeptical thinkers.

As FAIR stated:

Causal or not, there is a marked correlation between war industry funding and hawkish positions.

‘Think tanks with financial ties to the arms industry often support policies that would benefit the arms industry,’ the report noted.

For example, one Atlantic Council article advocated against ‘any compromise with the Kremlin,’ while another, titled ‘Equity for Ukraine’ argued that Ukraine has a ‘right to destroy critical infrastructure in Russia and plunge Moscow and other cities into darkness.’

These are direct exhortations to prolong and even escalate a war with the world’s foremost nuclear power. The safety of the world from a nuclear exchange, let alone that of the soldiers and civilians killed and dispossessed, is simply discarded for the profits of the donor class.

FAIR also cites numerous occasions on which the Wall Street Journal republished the agenda of the American Enterprise Institute, including two strong demands for the supply of tanks and armor to Ukraine.

‘Tanks and armored personnel carries are essential,’ said Frederick Kagan of the American Enterprise Institute. ‘Certainly they are essential for Ukraine’s counteroffensives, which simply cannot use the Russian World War I approach of masses of artillery and cannon fodder. So if Ukraine does not have sufficient mechanized vehicles to conduct a large-scale and protracted counteroffensive it will be unable to make significant territorial gains.’

The Wall Street Journal did not report that Frederick Kagan is the brother of Robert Kagan, leading neoconservative and an aggressive promoter of the disastrous U.S. foreign policy of “regime change.”

Described by the Tikvah Fund as “one of the intellectual architects of the successful ‘surge’ strategy in Iraq,” Frederick Kagan is the Director of the American Enterprise Institute’s Critical Threats Program. He and his brother Robert have done more than anyone else to promote the very “threats” which provide them with a lucrative livelihood.

The AEI, for which Frederick works, has gone so far as to argue that Ukraine should be supplied with nuclear weapons. Its senior fellow, Michael Rubin, made the following appeal:

What Biden should instead do is tell Russia clearly that any use of nuclear weapons of any size against Ukraine will lead to U.S. provision of the same types of nuclear weapons to Ukraine without any controls on where and how Ukraine might use them. The non-proliferation mafia might howl with outrage, but the West must gear its nuclear policy toward reality, not wishful thinking or an empty façade of a treaty regimen by which revisionist states no longer abide.

Just as during the Cold War, the best way to deter nuclear weapons use is to demonstrate a willingness to use them.

This is not only obscene, it also conflicts with Robert’s recent remarks that Ukraine is strategically irrelevant to the USA.

“[T]here is no way that [Vladimir] Putin’s conquest of Ukraine [would have] any immediate or even distant effect on American security.”

In fact, Robert said the belief that Ukraine’s fate had any bearing on U.S. national security was “kind of ludicrous.”

The first is that Ukraine’s security does not affect the security of Americans. U.S. policy in Europe historically aimed at preventing one country from dominating the continent. Even outright Russian control of Ukraine – which will not happen – would not let it dominate Europe.

The idea is absurd enough that even the neoconservative writer Robert Kagan recently acknowledged ‘there is no way that (Vladimir) Putin’s conquest of Ukraine (would have) any immediate or even distant effect on American security.’ As he put it, the claim is ‘kind of ludicrous.’

What is also ludicrous is the money which is channeled from the war industry to people like the Kagans, whose industry is warmongering. Like the Kagans, Rubin has authored books on the dangers of talking to – instead of bombing – “rogue states.”

His book is aptly titled “Dancing with the Devil.”

Zero accountability

The FAIR report notes that in no case did any news outlet disclose that the think tanks whose pro-war views they were broadcasting were sponsored by the military-industrial complex and its donor class.

The Quincy Institute did not find a single instance in which a media organization disclosed the fact that its source received funding from the war industry, obscuring how interested parties may be shaping coverage or promoting policy recommendations that directly benefit their funders.

The report also noted that in the few cases when sources were cited that did not have sponsors in the war industry, coverage was dramatically different, focusing not on sales but instead on “expository rather than prescriptive analysis, support for diplomatic solutions, and a focus on the impact of the war on different parts of society and the region.”

“Expository analysis” means “explaining what is happening”. This is opposed to “prescriptive analysis” – telling you what someone wants to happen. That someone is the donor class who profit from these wars, and the corporations who manufacture the weapons used in them.

Make a killing

The report shows how the deep pockets of the regime change racket have effectively purchased much of “the news.” The narrative of the war in Ukraine is largely a sales pitch for people who stand to make a literal killing.

With this report more light is shed on the absence of information in the news. What we are served instead are advertisements for the profiteering of death and destruction, dressed up as the highest ideals of a dutiful and principled democracy. Buyer beware.
