After another state in Mexico legalized killing babies in abortions, a top Catholic bishop says pro-abortion politicians will be excommunicated.
On February 25, the Mexican state of Campeche legalized killing babies up to 12 weeks in abortions, becoming the 21st state in Mexico to have legal abortions. This legislative change modifies articles 155, 157, 158, and 159 of the Penal Code of Campeche, permitting the “interruption of pregnancy” within the first 12 weeks.
Since October 1, 2024, when Claudia Sheinbaum assumed the presidency with her MORENA Party holding a majority, eight state legislatures—Jalisco, Michoacán, San Luis Potosí, Zacatecas, State of Mexico, Chiapas, Nayarit, and Chihuahua—have also allowed killing babies up to 12 weeks. Currently, two-thirds of Mexico’s states have legalized abortion within this timeframe.
The wave of states allowing the destruction of innocent human life before birth has triggered a passionate response from the Catholic bishops in the Hispanic nation.In response to Campeche’s decision, Bishop José Francisco González of the Diocese of Campeche expressed strong opposition.
During a press conference on February 26, he described the legislative move as “incomprehensible” from both legal and social perspectives, noting that the vote occurred “behind closed doors” during the state’s Carnival festivities, a significant cultural event.
Bishop González emphasized that, according to the Code of Canon Law, Catholics who promote, perform, or collaborate in abortions place themselves outside the communion of the Church and, therefore, should not participate in the sacraments. He specifically addressed Catholic legislators who supported the decriminalization, urging them to reconsider their stance and “rediscover their Catholic faith.”
The bishop pointed out that the Code of Canon Law establishes that those who support abortion “are as a matter of practice outside of communion with the Church. That is, those who promote it, those who carry it out, and those who collaborate cannot participate in the sacraments.”
He specifically warned that those who promoted this law who are Catholics and who support abortion “should not participate in the sacraments.” The prelate invited them to “reconsider and to rediscover their Catholic faith.”
Highlighting the gravity of abortion, the bishop stated that among all crimes against life, abortion particularly serious and ignominious. He called for the formation of a pro-life front, asserting that the protection of life is a societal responsibility, not solely that of the mother or father.
Bishop González warned that if abortion is justified on the grounds that the unborn child is unwanted, “later on, society — and we are not far away — will propose doing something similar with children already born who do not behave well, or who are sickly, or who are facing a disability” as well as with the sick and elderly. “Finally, no life will be respected, for whatever reason it can be cut short,” he added.
“Are there really concrete actions and policies to support pregnant women who want to become mothers? Is there support for elderly women who suffer from loneliness and illness? Is there support for mothers who suffer from the effects of alcoholism in one of their children or husbands? And what help do women with cancer or dialysis have? Is there help for women to get training and make their way in the challenging situations of modern life?” the prelate asked.
