House Passes Budget Resolution That Sets Up Defunding Planned Parenthood...

The U.S. House of Representatives passed a budget resolution Thursday that paves the way for defunding Planned Parenthood and other abortion companies through the budget reconciliation process.
The move is celebrated by pro-life advocates as a significant step toward ending taxpayer support for the abortion industry.
The resolution, which mirrors a similar measure passed by the Senate on April 5, allows congressional committees to begin drafting a reconciliation bill that could redirect hundreds of millions of dollars away from abortion businesses. If approved by both chambers, the reconciliation bill with defunding language would need only a simple majority to pass, avoiding the Senate’s 60-vote filibuster threshold—a strategic advantage for Republicans, who control both Congress and the White House.
Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, a leading anti-abortion organization, hailed the House vote as a victory for pro-life Americans.
“Thanks to Speaker Johnson’s effective leadership, the House of Representatives just unlocked the next step in the process that allows Congress to start drafting the reconciliation bill,” said Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of SBA Pro-Life America.
She told LifeNews: “Through reconciliation, our government can finally seize the opportunity to stop the flow of American tax dollars to Big Abortion. Funneling hundreds of millions of dollars to businesses like Planned Parenthood is a terrible investment and budget reconciliation is the most effective remedy to stop this. We look forward to continuing to work with House and Senate leadership as they craft the reconciliation bill. It’s time to stop forcing taxpayers to fund an industry responsible for America’s leading cause of death – abortion.”
The pro-life organization highlighted that Planned Parenthood received nearly $700 million in taxpayer funds in its last reported year while killing nearly 400,000 babies in abortions.
The budget reconciliation process has been used in the past to target abortion funding. Bills in 2015 and 2017 included provisions to cut federal dollars to Planned Parenthood, though those efforts ultimately fell short. This year, with unified Republican control of Congress and support from the Trump administration, pro-life advocates are optimistic about success.
The resolution still requires House and Senate negotiators to align their versions before a final reconciliation bill can be drafted and voted on.
Pro-life groups, including more than 150 organizations across all 50 states, have ramped up pressure on lawmakers, with hundreds of pro-life activists visiting Capitol Hill last month to push for the defunding measure.
If successful, the reconciliation bill could strip Planned Parenthood of roughly $500 million in annual Medicaid reimbursements, its largest source of federal funding, redirecting those dollars to community health centers.
The next steps hinge on the drafting of the reconciliation bill, expected to unfold over the coming weeks, as lawmakers balance fiscal priorities with the politically charged issue of abortion funding.
