A Texas woman was arrested for committing illegal abortions and operating clinics with unlicensed staff.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced the arrest of Maria Margarita Rojas, a 48-year-old midwife in the Houston area.
“In Texas, life is sacred. I will always do everything in my power to protect the unborn, defend our state’s pro-life laws, and work to ensure that unlicensed individuals endangering the lives of women by performing illegal abortions are fully prosecuted,” said Attorney General Paxton. “Texas law protecting life is clear, and we will hold those who violate it accountable.”
An extensive investigation by Attorney General Paxton’s Law Enforcement Division revealed that Rojas owned and operated multiple clinics under the names Clinica Waller Latinoamericana in Waller, Clinica Latinoamericana Telge in Cypress, and Latinoamericana Medical Clinic in Spring. These facilities unlawfully employed unlicensed individuals who falsely presented themselves as licensed medical professionals to provide medical treatment. Rojas also performed illegal abortion procedures in her clinics in direct violation of the Texas Human Life Protection Act.
In addition to the arrest, Attorney General Paxton’s Healthcare Program Enforcement Division filed for a temporary restraining order to shut down Rojas’s network of clinics to prevent further illegal activity. Under the Texas Human Life Protection Act of 2021, the Attorney General has the authority to seek civil penalties of at least $100,000 per violation for the unlawful performance of an abortion. Waller County District Attorney Sean Whittmore referred the case to Attorney General Paxton for prosecution.
The state’s investigation found that “Dr. Maria” owned and operated multiple facilities known as Clinica Waller Latinoamericana in Waller, Clinica Latinoamericana Telge in Cypress, and Latinoamericana Medical Clinic in Spring. Paxton said Rojas committed illegal abortion procedures in her clinics.
To block any further crimes by Rojas’ businesses, the attorney general filed for a temporary restraining order to shut them down while the trial plays out.
Texas Right to Life President Dr. John Seago responded, “Abortionists haven’t given up their fight for Texas; they’ve gone online and underground. God made every child in His image. That’s why preborn babies killed in illegal abortions deserve justice.”
Texas is not Pro-Life unless we actually enforce our laws. The state still needs more tools to block the abortion industry’s new tactics online, but Texas Right to Life is thankful that General Paxton is proving we can save a lot of lives by upholding current law.
Texas must pass more protections to save children in the womb from the new insidious efforts of abortion activists. The Woman and Child Protection Act (Senate Bill 2880 and House Bill 5510) could make Texas the first state to target the abortion industry’s underground operations.
