The New Commandment of Jesus...

"I have a simple lesson to give to all mankind at this time, My child. It is, as We know, charity among mankind. All works and all acts of sacrifice, have they a value when they are not covered by charity? And what is charity, My children? When you come across lives that have been darkened by sin and evil, you must not become smug; you must not feel secure in your own piety and graces given to you, but you must feel a sadness of heart for those who have fallen into the darkness. You must not judge, for the Eternal Father has the only key to an individual heart." - Our Lady of the Roses, March 18, 1976

The following is an excerpt from the book, Love One Another by Louis Colin, C.SS.R.

Again, why should we love our neighbor? Simply because he is God's child, and our own brother. We are born, not only of blood, nor of the will of the flesh and man, but of God, ex Deo nati (John 1:13).

Behold what manner of charity the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called, and should be the sons of God (1 John 3:1).

This is a mysterious begetting, a spiritual rebirth. Nobody may see the kingdom of God unless he is reborn (John 3:3). This rebirth is nothing other than a resemblance to and a participation in, the eternal generation of the Word. Just as He has communicated all His substance, attributes and glory to His Son, so also the Father has infused into our humanity something of His divinity, and of His infinite perfections, partakers of the divine nature (2 Pet. 1:4).

Behold man, an earthly creature, suddenly raised to Heaven sharing intimately in the Trinitarian life and become himself also the son of the Almighty! His child, not His creature, servant, slave, thing, but His child! What a name! How noble, splendid, rich and holy! His child, who becomes His heir tomorrow! For everything which the Father possesses and is will become the child's property in an endless Vision of love: And if a son, an heir also (Gal. 4:7). The child and living image of God Himself. Dii estis (Ps. 81:6).

Is it possible then that we should no love this soul, "for the love of God, from whom, by whom and for whom she is ... whom she resembles in a most particular manner." (St. Francis de Sales, Treatise on the Love of God, p. 442) Every man who brushes past us, however miserable he be, is a prodigious being, greater than the entire universe since he is the child of God! Do we ever even think of this?

Ignorance of, or indifference to, this truth explains the lack, or mediocrity, of our fraternal love, though it does not always excuse it. Instead of considering our neighbor in the light of faith, we look upon him through our fleshly eyes. Seeing merely the man, with all his deficiencies, weaknesses, miseries, we can only love him with a purely human, fragile, variable love.

Ah, if every Christian appeared to us as he is in God's reflection, without perhaps going as far as St. Francis de Sales would wish, to the point "of casting ourselves upon his neck, caressing him, weeping over him with love ... invoking upon him thousands of blessings", (ibid., p. 441) what respect, what consideration, and what affability would we not show towards him! How anxious we would be to oblige him, to avoid offending or injuring him! How quick to serve him--in short, what divine, purely disinterested, devoted and selfless love we would have for him! It would be a reproduction or rather an extension of that love which we bear for God Himself.

Everybody--in reality, or at least potentially--is a child of God; therefore all are brothers.

Beside, or rather above, a certain human fraternity, which one is somewhat ashamed of mentioning in our days, there exists another divine brotherhood, not of blood, but of spirit, which carries no overtones of sinister mockery. All are Christ's brothers in the Fatherhood of God. Humanity is an immense universal family whose members can and should love each other, without even having met or known each other. There are no strangers, and above all, no enemies in this family; none other than brothers who march, shoulder to shoulder, as travelers towards their final Fatherland in the Father's house. For a Christian, every man is a brother whom he loves--according to nature's law--with a brotherly love. Loving one another with the charity of brotherhood (Rom. 12:10).

What shame for God, and what suffering it causes His paternal heart to behold brothers, His beloved sons, separated by indifference, or disunited by hate! What he insists upon in everyone is a total reciprocal love. In His kingdom, there is no vestige of jealousy, hate, dissension, wickedness, or vengeance. There is only peace and joy in the blossoming of immutable charity. (pp. 14-16)
