The temple must be purified and the moneychangers thrown out of it. This is the theological key that has compelled Jesús López Sáez, a priest from Ávila (Spain), prestigious catechist and founder of the Community of Ayala, to delve into the horrifying history of the death of John Paul I. After 25 years of thorough investigation, his conclusions are staggering and throw the official version out the window. The Roman Curia, with John Paul II at its head, always maintained that the death of Pope Luciani was due to an illness, incapable of assuming the tremendous weight of the tiara. López Sáez maintains, on the other hand, that the death of the meteorite Pope (“he was in office only 31 days”) was by an assassination orchestrated by some members of the Curia, of the mafia and of the masons; the assassination of a Pope completely healthy and capable of ruling the Church, “to the point” that he was thinking of giving the Vatican, its monies and the Roman Curia a 180-degree turn.
With an official explanation, Rome closed the case. But, even today, in all of Christianity there continues to flow an air of mystery and suspicion. The wound was falsely healed. In fact, after his death numerous bishops and even some cardinals asked Rome for a thorough investigation. Jesús López belongs to this minority group that wishes to “wash” the stained image of a pontificate that could have been revolutionary in the Church, to do justice to the smiling Pope, and in so doing, purify the temple of the Curia and help the Church to recover its evangelical splendor. With good contacts both in Spain and abroad, with the help of bishop and cardinal friends, Jesús López set down his first findings in the book Se Pedirá Cuenta (An Account Will Be Asked by Orígenes Editorial), published 12 years after the mysterious demise of John Paul I.
At that time Father López Sáez strove to investigate the turbulent history of the death of Pope Luciani, because “each generation will be asked for an account of the blood of its prophets”. But the instruction of the Church is clear and adamant: “No clergyman can remove the ashes of Pope Luciani and, because of the numerous questions of the faithful throughout the world, the clergy should respond with the official truth”. But Father López did not give up and, since then, continued visiting archives, consulting sources and direct protagonists of those events, who with time and age, are starting to talk.
THE DAY OF RECKONING
The fruit of this work that took years (of investigation) is a new book, El Día de la Cuenta (The Day of Reckoning), in which he set forth his definitive conclusions. But the Church doesn´t like for one of its most prestigious priests to proclaim that a Pope was assassinated and for him to denounce the schemes of a Curia, “a true den of thieves”, he says. And he received pressures of all kinds. Sentimental pressures from letters from his friends: such as the one from the present Nuncio in Croacia, the Spaniard Francisco Javier Lozano, begging him to not publish a book that “could bring so much harm to the Church of Christ”. He warned him that he is not the one to sit on the defendant´s seat of the accused of the Holy See. And with affectionate blackmails: “I would have given anything for you to have seen the expression of pain of the ´authority of the Church´ (John Paul II) when some months ago I presented him with a brief summary of your manuscript. This authority is used to suffering due to slanders, infidelities, including being shot at on May 13th”.
The affectionate pressures were followed by the canonical ones. The then bishop of Avila, Adolfo González Montes, threatened in writing to retreat his ministerial licenses “forbidding celebration of the sacraments”. But Father López did not give in. And he remembered what Saint Catherine of Sienna said: “The ministers of God who do not denounce the evils of the Church are bad pastors. They do not have a dog, the dog of their conscience, or it would bark at them”. And he, “Father López”, has a dog which doesn´t stop barking at him. And because he continued on his way, he was thrown out of the Episcopal Conference where he worked for the catechism commission. And perhaps he lost out of the opportunity of obtaining a miter and the solemn recognition of the Community of Ayala, which he founded. Now he has had to edit his book into an “edition not able to be purchased, but for private use only.” [Editor’s note: The meaning is that Father López has had to add a note to his book that it cannot be publicly sold in bookstores and should be for private use only]. Even so, by word of mouth and from hand to hand, he has sold 2,000 copies.
And along with the avalanche of reproaches, some congratulations. Such as the one from Bishop Casaldáliga: “All of your material is important for history and for the purification of the Church”. Or the enigmatic letter from Eduardo Luciani, brother of the deceased Pope. Although in it he doesn´t pass judgment, he leaves the shadow of a doubt as to the demise of his brother.
PUBLIC EDITION
As the good priest that he is, Jesús López feels his heart divided with regard to the conclusions of his investigation. “But in conscience I cannot keep quiet and, although I do not live in a state of fear, I know that harm can come to me. But… as the Acts of the Apostles says, ´we must obey God above men´. Furthermore, Father López is thinking of making a public edition of his book and flooding the bookstores so that the people will know and the moneychangers will leave the temple”.
“This morning, September 29, 1978, at five thirty, the private secretary of the Pope, not having found the Holy Priest in the chapel as was his custom, looked for him in his room and found him dead in bed, with the light on, as if he were still reading. Dr. Renato Buzzonetti immediately arrived and confirmed his death, having probably occurred around 23 hours of the previous day due to an acute infarction of the myocardium”. Thus read the official communiqué of the Vatican. A version filled with falsehoods, according to Father López Sáez. Among them: “a diagnosis without basis (acute infarction of the myocardium and, furthermore, instantaneous), given by a doctor who did not know Luciani as his patient, without an (official) autopsy being performed, and manipulated information as to the finding of the body and the circumstances of his death”.
WHO KILLED THE POPE?
It has been proven now that John Paul I enjoyed good health. His personal doctor, Dr. Da Ros stated: “the Pope has never spent 24 hours in bed, or a morning or an afternoon, he has never had a headache or a fever that required his taking to bed. He enjoyed good health: no dietary problems, he ate everything that he was served, he did not have diabetic problems or of cholesterol; he only had a bit of low blood pressure”. To have low blood pressure, for many doctors, is “a life insurance”.
It is also known that John Paul I did not die from an infarction, because “there was not a struggle with death”. With time the Vatican has recognized that the first person to have found him was not Monsignor Magee, his secretary, but rather Sister Vincenza, the nun who took care of him. According to the account given by this Sister, “the Pope was sitting on the bed, with glasses on and some sheets of paper in his hands. His head was leaning to his right and one leg stretched out on the bed; a small smile (on his lips).”

What did he have in his hands? “Evidently not Kempis, as the Vatican said, a book too thick to have been held by his fingers. The notes that he had were those of the two-hour conversation the Pope had had with the Secretary of State, Cardinal Villot, the previous afternoon,” says Father López Sáez. During “the conversation” the Pope had informed his number two (person) of the important changes he planned to bring about in the Curia. And that was the detonation for his death.
What was the weapon of the crime? “Although the Vatican denies it, an autopsy was performed on John Paul I and by this means it was learned that he had died from an ingestion of a very strong dose of a vasodilator. This is a medicine absolutely contra-indicated for someone with low blood pressure, as was the case with the Pope. That fits in with the position in which the body was found: No struggle with death, as would correspond to one affected by a depressant substance and falling asleep”, Father López explains.
The medication which was not prescribed by his personal physician, as he himself recognizes, was forced upon the Pope or it was injected into him. Erika, a mystic, in a book by the famous theologian and later Cardinal Urs von Balthasar, claims to have had a revelation in which she saw someone injecting the Pope with the medicine. And John Paul II conceded the biretta to Von Balthasar knowing, furthermore, that Erika said in the book “the Holy Father knows and believes it” (that his predecessor was assassinated).
The French Ambassador, Roger Peyrefitte, author of The Red Cassock, asserts that the Pope was administered a lethal injection by Brucciato, member of the mafia – who later died in an attempt against Roberto Rossone, Vice President of the Ambrosian Bank – accompanied by two Monsignors of the Curia. According to Father López, “nobody knows exactly who killed the Pope. Everything indicates that it was the P2 Masonic Lodge. No particular person can be pointed out, although there are those who point out the then President of the IOR (Vatican Bank), Monsignor Marcinckus, and the then Secretary of State, French Cardinal Villot”.
In any case, according to López, “a death provoked at an opportune time”. Why? The papers that the Pope had in his hand contained the new organizational chart of the Curia and of the Italian Church: the resignation of Villot and of the Archbishop of Milan, Monsignor Colombo; Casaroli´s transfer to Milan; Benelli, as the new Secretary of State; Poletti, Vicar of Rome, to Florence; and Felici, the new Vicar of Rome”. Hours before John Paul I had presented the organizational chart to Villot, he (Villot) had said: “You are free to decide and I will obey. But know that these changes will suppose a treason to the heritage received from Paul VI”. And John Paul I answered: “No Pope governs forever”.
It has been proven that Luciani was a Pope who “was on the road of prophecy”; that is to say, “a Pope who does not want to be Head of State, who does not want bodyguards or soldiers, who wants a profound restoration of the Church and, furthermore, to govern with the bishops. A Pope of the poor who wants to promote in the Vatican a great charitable institute to house those (who do not have a roof over their heads) in Rome”, says Father López Sáez.
The Pope was definitely killed because he wanted to reorganize the structure of the Curia, publish several encyclicals (on collegiality or women in the Church), remove from office the president of the IOR, reform the Vatican bank and openly face masonry and the mafia who roam around the Roman Curia. According to Father López Sáez, “the determining factor was the matter of the IOR, because the Curia wanted to avoid the bankruptcy of the Ambrosian Bank, and the decision of the Pope would precipitate it. They wanted a Pope who would avoid this bankruptcy”.
But, although they removed John Paul I, his successor, John Paul II, could not avoid the bankruptcy of the Ambrosian Bank and, furthermore, he removed president Monsignor Marcinckus from office: “The difference is that John Paul I wanted to throw the moneychangers out of the temple, while John Paul II expelled some (masons), at the same time that he embraced the Opus Dei. The Opus was an institution that came out on top and the pontificate of Pope Wojtyla made it a more profitable one: a personal prelature, a saint and the control of power in Rome.
In any case, Pope Luciani knew that he was going to face powerful enemies. On several occasions he affirmed, according to Father López, that his pontificate would be short and that he already knew the name of his successor. Sometimes, they call him “the foreigner” and also “the one who was seated in front of me at the conclave”; that is to say, Wojtyla. Why did John Paul I already know the name of his successor before his death and before the celebration of the conclave? “Because John Paul II was Cardinal Villot´s and the Curia´s candidate, and was anxious to once more control power. Not in vain the curials say: ´We have lost three conclaves (John XXIII´s, Paul VI¨s and John Paul I´s), but (we won´t) the fourth´”.
Father López Sáez believes, as does Erika the mystic, that “the Pope knows”. Moreover, he believes that his last poetic work, Roman Tryptic, is a veiled answer to his book that he sent the Pope (and which was) stamped as being received by the Secretariat of State. For this reason, in 3 simple papers, John Paul II speaks of the Sistine Chapel and of the next conclave. “It is a form of answering me and the cardinals who will be present at the next conclave. He comes to say ´here is something…´. And if he answers, it is for the electoral cardinals to keep in mind, to elect in unison and to repair the unjust history that has been attributed to Pope Luciani”.
That is one of the things that hurts the founder of the Community of Ayala the most. “John Paul I was not a weak and indecisive pope as depicted by the Vatican. What are at stake are not only the cause and the circumstances of his death, but also his figure and his testimony”. In fact, at this time there are two processes which are ongoing in reference to Pope Luciani. The first is a civil case, re-opened in Rome by Attorney Pietro Saviotti. “I have sent the Attorney all of my data and documents. I hope that the truth will be clarified and vindicated," says Father López.
The second process is the beatification of John Paul I. Father López does not wish to hear of this kind of process: “Pope Luciani does not need miracles to be a saint. John Paul I has to be beatified as a martyr, after a thorough investigation into his death and restoration of his distorted image.”

BACKGROUND OF FATHER JESÚS LÓPEZ SÁEZ
Jesús López Sáez is one of the best Spanish specialists of adult catechetics. He was born in Aldeaseca (Avila, Spain), on April 12, 1944. He has an M.A. degree in Philosophy and Letters, Theology and Psychology. After studying in Salamanca, Rome and Madrid, he became a member of the founders of Añastro, headquarters of the Episcopal Conference, and was in charge of adult catechetics of the National Secretariatship. In 1973 he founded the parish of Cristo de la Salud (Christ of Health), at Calle Ayala 12, the community that carries the name of the street. There he, together with a group of Christians “unsatisfied with conventional Christianity, sought to find “through the experience of the first Christian communities, how to live today the renewal of a Church that, being old and sterile, could again be fertile. Starting with nine founders, the group has become a movement that embraces 2,000 persons whose goal is to “promote listening to the word of God as the basis of personal, social and ecclesiastical life, while catechetical and community groups are formed”. They all work very closely with the founder. “He will never be alone in this or in anything. The community responds completely,” said the vice president of the Association, Jesús Martín. It is Martin´s opinion that the 25-year investigation intends “to recuperate the figure of a martyr, John Paul I”. In fact, there is a picture of that Pope in the room where they meet, and two large maps, one of Spain and the other of the world. On both maps the one hundred teams of the Community of Ayala are marked with red and blue thumb tacks: Madrid, Segovia and the Canary Islands, and also in Cuba, U.S.A., Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, Japan, Iran and Taiwan. They are estranged from the neo-conservative movements that hold the power of the Church.
