as guilty as the original one who had started the evil.

in danger of being corrupted, misled, and even destroyed, and you do nothing
about it, because you do not wish to offend your superiors, because you value
your life in this world too much and your good living; I assure you, O pastors,

banished from eternal life in Heaven, and you shall join your father who is the

Three former members of the Intercessors of the Lamb said Monday that it was like a death when their group was shut down and their religious vows voided — but that they are relieved to be away from the group's Omaha campus.
“There have been a lot of tears,” said the Rev. Mark Nolte, a Roman Catholic priest who belonged to the organization. “But at the same time, we know there's a bright future for us, and we're thankful to the archbishop for supporting us and being willing to walk with us.”
Nolte, Linda Marie Neuhoff and Lynne Keating are among 48 members of the Intercessors whom the Archdiocese of Omaha is putting up at a Catholic retreat and conference center outside Schuyler.
They went there by bus Friday after Omaha Archbishop George Lucas shut down the Intercessors of the Lamb as a Catholic religious organization. Lucas said the board of the Intercessors' civil corporation had impeded his efforts to reform the organization, including blocking access to its financial records and refusing to meet with him.
David Levy, an attorney for the civil corporation's board, has said its members disagree with the archdiocese's findings regarding the association. The civil corporation remains in control of the group's property in Ponca Hills.
In the first public statements by former Intercessors since the events of Friday, Nolte, Neuhoff and Keating spoke with The World-Herald in a conference room at the St. Benedict Center.
They had given up the names — Father John Mark, Sister Elizabeth Marie, Sister Judith Marie — they had taken as Intercessors. And they had given up their white and teal robes that had become a part of the fabric of Omaha in recent years.
Nolte wore the traditional black clothing and Roman collar of a priest. Neuhoff and Keating wore denim jumpers — their cleaning clothes, they said. The former hermits who had taken vows of poverty had not had a chance to use their clothing allowances from the archdiocese and had nothing else to wear.
They said they still believed in the Intercessors' power of communal intercession for the church, primarily prayer for priests. But they also said they agreed with, and supported, the archbishop's decision to suppress the organization.
“God bless the archbishop,” said Keating, 58, who ran a business in Delaware before joining the Intercessors more than six years ago. “It was a courageous thing for him to do.”
Like other members, including doctors and a dentist and people from many walks of life, she said, she gladly gave up everything she owned to join.
“Everyone here (at the retreat center) is living out the full reason we became an Intercessor, to lay down our lives for the church,” Keating said of the decision by the former members to accept Lucas' decision.
“Our vocations were our lives,” she said. “We were willing to let everything go so that this truth could be protected within the Catholic Church. As painful as it was, we were happy to do it.”
The three said the climate in the faith community had deteriorated in recent years and had grown increasingly tense over the past two weeks.
The founder of the organization, Mother Nadine Brown, stepped down as its general director at Lucas' request. Archdiocesan officials said that happened because an official church inquiry found numerous changes that needed to be made.
Basically, two factions formed after that, Nolte said. The vast majority supported the archbishop's call for the group to make reforms so it could move ahead toward further church recognition, he said.
The archbishop appointed the Rev. Gregory Baxter, pastor of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church in Omaha, as a trustee to lead the group. Nolte, 50, a former optometrist who had worked as an assistant pastor at St. Margaret Mary, was made superior of the Intercessors' men. Neuhoff, 47, a former kindergarten teacher from Dallas who has a degree in accounting from Notre Dame University, was appointed as superior of the women.
The other faction was a group of 10 women and one man — not a priest — who sided with Brown, Nolte said. They were not relocated with the others and could still be living at the property.
“We had thought she was going to stay around and become a humble intercessor behind the scenes,” Nolte said of Brown.
Many of the hermits, Nolte said, had believed for a long time that the organization needed a change in governance and a restructuring, as many Catholic religious organizations have undergone. They believed that moment had come for the Intercessors.
He and other members were, among other things, looking forward to making peace with neighbors with whom the Intercessors had a tenuous relationship.
But on the morning of Sunday, Oct. 3 — two days after Brown's resignation was announced — people close to her began taking steps signaling that they would not comply with the archbishop, the three former Intercessors said.
A board member and a man she identified as her lawyer walked into a house the Intercessors owned on a neighboring street and announced that they were there for the association's assets, Neuhoff said.
She said they took computers and files with financial and personal records from the house. Then people began carrying boxes out of the main house on the Intercessors campus, including in the middle of the night. That was confusing and frightening, the three said.
The three called police and archdiocesan officials. They were told that the civil corporation had the legal right to move its property.
The corporation changed the locks on the Intercessors' homes and asked for their car keys, Nolte said. It was becoming obvious, he said, that the faction close to Brown would not budge.
He said the situation became more tense in the two weeks that followed, culminating with Friday's suppression and the archbishop's offer of sanctuary at the retreat.
“We were all very happy to get on that bus,” Nolte said. “This was not done with any malice or evil intent toward Mother Nadine. It was necessary for us to disassociate ourselves from her because of her lack of obedience to the church.”
Brown and other leaders could not be reached for comment Monday.
Levy said Monday: “It was a very chaotic time immediately after the archdiocese had Mother Nadine resign and took over the campus. The officers and employees of the corporation were doing what they thought was appropriate to do to protect the assets and property of the corporation.”
The Intercessors' civil corporation, he said, “was continuing to take care of the hermits and would have continued to do so.”
Levy declined to comment on specifics, saying he didn't think it productive to get into a back and forth.
Nolte said a board member told him the members would have to go elsewhere. That process is just beginning.
Nolte said he hopes that the group can create a new community with the same calling, and he said that Baxter and Lucas have agreed to examine whether that could be possible.
