In just a couple of weeks, President Barack Obama, along with GOP Candidate Mitt Romney, will be attending the Al Smith Dinner at the invitation of Timothy Cardinal Dolan.  We can expect to see pictures of the most pro-abortion, anti-Catholic president this country has ever seen sitting next to and laughing and joking with the aforementioned Cardinal Dolan, head of the US Bishops Conference and bishop of the archdiocese of New York.  To say this sends a confusing message to Catholics is to put it mildly.  

Now we are told that Cardinal Dolan, along with my bishop, Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio of Brooklyn, is telling us that the government needs to start doing more for the poor.  This is the same government which gives $500 million every year to Planned Parenthood, has declared its support for same sex marriage and has also declared war on the Catholic Church.  These two prelates are telling us that this government, which has broken every moral law, should be the one to help the poor.  Wouldn't it be a better idea and much more helpful for those who are oppressed in this country for the good Cardinal and Bishop to speak out against the immorality that is being perpetrated upon the American public by this government rather than ask an immoral government to do what the Church should be doing?

One other thing.  Cardinal Dolan and Bishop DiMarzio, have you ever heard of socialism?  Do you not see that when the government starts providing for the people, we are getting dangerously close to a socialist government?  And did you know that the Catholic Church condemns socialism as evil?   Furthermore, it just doesn't work.  Since the Johnson Administration in the 1960's, the government has spent more than $13 trillion on the war on poverty.  All of that money has gotten us nowhere.  Why do you think it will suddenly work now?

This is what Pope Leo XIII wrote about socialism in his encyclical on Capital and Labor: 

4. To remedy these wrongs the socialists, working on the poor man's envy of the rich, are striving to do away with private property, and contend that individual possessions should become the common property of all, to be administered by the State or by municipal bodies. They hold that by thus transferring property from private individuals to the community, the present mischievous state of things will be set to rights, inasmuch as each citizen will then get his fair share of whatever there is to enjoy. But their contentions are so clearly powerless to end the controversy that were they carried into effect the working man himself would be among the first to suffer. They are, moreover, emphatically unjust, for they would rob the lawful possessor, distort the functions of the State, and create utter confusion in the community.

5. It is surely undeniable that, when a man engages in remunerative labor, the impelling reason and motive of his work is to obtain property, and thereafter to hold it as his very own. If one man hires out to another his strength or skill, he does so for the purpose of receiving in return what is necessary for the satisfaction of his needs; he therefore expressly intends to acquire a right full and real, not only to the remuneration, but also to the disposal of such remuneration, just as he pleases. Thus, if he lives sparingly, saves money, and, for greater security, invests his savings in land, the land, in such case, is only his wages under another form; and, consequently, a working man's little estate thus purchased should be as completely at his full disposal as are the wages he receives for his labor. But it is precisely in such power of disposal that ownership obtains, whether the property consist of land or chattels. Socialists, therefore, by endeavoring to transfer the possessions of individuals to the community at large, strike at the interests of every wage-earner, since they would deprive him of the liberty of disposing of his wages, and thereby of all hope and possibility of increasing his resources and of bettering his condition in life. 

With that in mind, let's see what Cardinal Dolan and Archbishop DiMarzio have to say about the government doing more to help the poor.  From the Examiner:

Top U.S. Bishop says government needs to do more for poor, blasts rhetoric

The top U.S. Bishop, Cardinal Dolan, issued a strong statement todaycondemning the political rhetoric that portrays poor people in a negative way. He said it is not enough for churches and charities to help the poor; the government must play its part as well.  [Where does His Eminence feel the government gets its money from?  The government is not a business, it does not generate its own income.  It takes from the people.  If the government is giving to the poor, all they are doing is taking money from one group of people to give to another.  That is called socialism.  There is one other problem:  our government is broke.  There is no more money.]

Cardinal Dolan, who was joined by Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio of the Diocese of Brooklyn, sounded more like Sister Simone Campbell and her fellow Nuns on the Bus today. The nuns visited nine states this summer and have continued to express their opposition to Republican-led budget cuts to food stamps, Medicaid, and other assistance programs. Paul Ryan is the chief Congressman behind those cuts.  [I would hope and pray that this observation, that he is sounding like Sister Simone Campbell of the LCWR which is under severe criticism from the Vatican, would give His Eminence great pause.]

Undoubtedly, the rhetoric the Bishops are speaking of are remarks made by Mitt Romney. In a secretly taped speech, Romney said that 47% of the nation does not pay taxes; they consider themselves victims; and they believe they are “entitled” to free food, free healthcare, housing, and everything else, and they do not take responsibility for their livelihood. In short, they are leeches. 

The Nuns on the Bus were in New York yesterday to call attention to the anti-poor policies in the Ryan Budget which House Republicans passed this year. Mitt Romney has essentially adopted that as his plan too by picking Ryan to be his running mate. The nuns may have struck gold. Cardinal Dolan and Bishop DiMarzio agree. They made a statement today:

“While government programs provide enormous support to poor Americans it is not enough, and the constant portrayal of the poor ‘in a negative way’ is hurting efforts to aid the worse off.  [Is it coincidence that the Nuns on the Bus and Cardinal Dolan are using the same words?]

1) It is not enough. Even with the generosity of the American people, and the work of groups like the Saint Vincent de Paul Society and so many others, much more needs to be done, and not just by private charity. The government must continue to play its part as well.  [Again, we are talking "socialism" here - the government transferring money from one group of people to another.] 

2) There are very dark clouds. Too much rhetoric in the country portrays poor people in a very negative way. At the same time, this persistent sluggish economic and slow pace of recovery does two things that hurt the poor: it does not provide sufficient jobs for poor people to earn decent living to support themselves, and it provides less resources for government to do its part for Americans in need.” 

Dolan and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) have been consistent in their opposition to such budget cuts. They called the cuts “unjustified and wrong” in a letter to Congress earlier this year. Nevertheless Cardinal Dolan hasn’t always given the impression the Bishops were serious.

In August, he was introduced at the Republican National Convention by House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) who called the Cardinal someone who “the preferential option for the poor doesn’t easily translate into a preferential option for big government.” Now, though, Dolan seems to be calling on the government to do even more than it currently does to help the poor.

Cardinal Dolan has been vociferous in his opposition to President Obama over the rule that requires insurance companies to provide free contraception to policy holders—even if they work for a Catholic-run school or hospital. The Bishops called that the worst attack on religious freedom in history. They organized a “Fortnight for Freedom” event to get priests to urge Catholics to register and vote against the politicians who “attack religions freedom.”

This underscores the dilemma that Catholics have this election. The Church tells them not-so-subtly to vote against Obama because of contraception. On the other hand, Romney and Ryan promote the very anti-poor policies the Bishops decry. So what are Catholics to do?

Polls show President Obama is leading among Catholic voters.  [Could this have something to do with the confusing message Cardinal Dolan and too many other bishops are sending to the faithful?] He has one of the highest leads among Catholic voters since John Kennedy in 1960. Obama, for the first time, is ahead with white Catholics as well as Hispanic and African Americans. Catholics voted against John Kerry, a Catholic, in 2004.

Perhaps rank and file Catholics and Nuns are influencing the Cardinal to take a closer look. Jesus said “Blessed are the poor for they shall inherit the earth.” It might not go over so well with Jesus for his Vicar to turn his back on the poor by favoring a rich guy who thinks the poor are leeches.

The advice given to Cardinal Dolan in the last paragraph is from a liberal newspaper that couldn't care less what the Church teaches.  Cardinal Dolan should not be taking his cues from "rank and file Catholics and Nuns."  Cardinal Dolan should be following Catholic Church teaching.  

Cardinal Dolan says it is not enough for churches and charities to help the poor. The State must get involved. Pope Leo XIII would disagree:

[I]n order to spare them the shame of begging, the Church has provided aid for the needy. The common Mother of rich and poor has aroused everywhere the heroism of charity, and has established congregations of religious and many other useful institutions for help and mercy, so that hardly any kind of suffering could exist which was not afforded relief. At the present day many there are who, like the heathen of old, seek to blame and condemn the Church for such eminent charity. They would substitute in its stead a system of relief organized by the State. But no human expedients will ever make up for the devotedness and self sacrifice of Christian charity. Charity, as a virtue, pertains to the Church; for virtue it is not, unless it be drawn from the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ; and whosoever turns his back on the Church cannot be near to Christ.

I think it is safe to say that a government which has legalized the killing of its unborn children and has now forced the Catholic Church to go against her most fundamental teachings has "turned his back on the Church" and therefore "cannot be near to Christ."  

Pope Leo XIII goes on to write:

The foremost duty, therefore, of the rulers of the State should be to make sure that the laws and institutions, the general character and administration of the commonwealth, shall be such as of themselves to realize public well-being and private prosperity. This is the proper scope of wise statesmanship and is the work of the rulers. Now a State chiefly prospers and thrives through moral rule, well-regulated family life, respect for religion and justice, the moderation and fair imposing of public taxes, the progress of the arts and of trade, the abundant yield of the land-through everything, in fact, which makes the citizens better and happier. Hereby, then, it lies in the power of a ruler to benefit every class in the State, and amongst the rest to promote to the utmost the interests of the poor; and this in virtue of his office, and without being open to suspicion of undue interference - since it is the province of the commonwealth to serve the common good. And the more that is done for the benefit of the working classes by the general laws of the country, the less need will there be to seek for special means to relieve them.

So Pope Leo XIII, in direct opposition to Cardinal Dolan, did not believe that the State should be involved in helping the poor in the same way that churches and charities do.  To the contrary, Pope Leo XIII states that it is not throwing money at the poor that will most help them but "the more that is done for the benefit of the working classes by the general laws of the country, the less need will there be to seek for special means to relieve them."  Pope Leo XIII tells us that "a State chiefly prospers and thrives through moral rule, well-regulated family life, respect for religion and justice."  We have none of these things in the United States of America in 2012.  That is why the poor are suffering, and why their numbers and their suffering will increase.  We are seeing it in Europe in Greece and Spain right now, and we will soon see it right here in our own United States.

There is a major root cause of the problems here in the United States and around the world that no one ever brings up, not even our bishops.  One major reason why we are suffering economically is abortion.  In the US alone, we have murdered 60 million babies.  How many taxpayers and job creators have we destroyed?  How many have been killed who could be contributing to this broken economy and making it better?  And we haven't killed only those 60 million babies.  We have also killed all of their children and grandchildren as well.  Of course, 60 million represents only those who have been killed surgically.  We can only estimate how many tens of millions, maybe hundreds of millions of babies have been killed chemically.  

So instead of telling the government to keep throwing more money at the poor, which obviously isn't working, why not tell the government that they must repeal the most unjust and evil law of our land - the legalized killing of unborn children?  Isn't that what is really hurting the poor, and everyone else for that matter?   We have a holocaust happening here in this country and throughout the world, with hundreds of millions of children and all of their progeny being wiped out, and then we wonder why the world's economies are self destructing?  Lifesite News quoted from a book entitled, "Redeeming Economics" by John Mueller on the abortion's effects on the economy:

“When Roe v. Wade legalized abortion in 1973, the workforce did not immediately feel the adverse effects of abortion…However, in the early 1990s, the economy began to feel the pinch. A third of the workers that would have entered the marketplace at that time had been aborted."

This is what the bishops should be talking about.  We live in a post-Christian and immoral society.  That is why people are suffering. The solution to our problems is not asking the government for more money.  It is to preach the saving message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, which includes respect for human life. Forget this losing message about "religious freedom" and tell the people and the government that their laws are immoral and evil. The great suffering in our nation will continue and worsen unless and until our government has respect for the family and respect for human life, which means, among other things, ending abortion, contraception and euthanasia. This is what Pope Leo XIII told the Church over 100 years ago, and it is even more true today:

Every minister of holy religion must bring to the struggle the full energy of his mind and all his power of endurance. Moved by your authority, venerable brethren, and quickened by your example, they should never cease to urge upon men of every class, upon the high-placed as well as the lowly, the Gospel doctrines of Christian life; by every means in their power they must strive to secure the good of the people; and above all must earnestly cherish in themselves, and try to arouse in others, charity, the mistress and the queen of virtues. For, the happy results we all long for must be chiefly brought about by the plenteous outpouring of charity; of that true Christian charity which is the fulfilling of the whole Gospel law, which is always ready to sacrifice itself for others' sake, and is man's surest antidote against worldly pride and immoderate love of self; that charity whose office is described and whose Godlike features are outlined by the Apostle St. Paul in these words: "Charity is patient, is kind, . . . seeketh not her own, . . . suffereth all things, . . . endureth all things."

We are in big trouble when Catholic Church leaders, who should be bringing the saving and life-affirming message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the world are instead calling upon an anti-God and anti-life government to be their savior.
