The following was written by John Paul Wohlscheid.  This story was published in the bulletin of St. Mary's Church, Lowell, Michigan.  Maybe you could have it published in your own local parish bulletin. 

Bishop Frederic Baraga was born on June 29, 1797 in the Austrian Dukedom of Carniola, modern day Slovenia, to Johann Nepomuc Baraga and Maria Katherine Josefa. He was the fourth of five children. Because he grew up during the Napoleonic wars, the official language used in his school changed several times. As a result, by a young age Baraga could speak Slovenian, French and German, in addition to the Latin and Greek he was required to learn in school.

After becoming an orphan at age 14, Baraga studied law at the University of Vienna. He graduated with high honors in 1821. After meeting St. Clement Horbauer, Baraga was inspired to enter the priesthood. He was ordained on September 21, 1823. Baraga gave up all claims to his family estate and dedicated himself to serving God’s people.

He soon became interested in foreign missions. He left his native country in October 1830 to spend the 37 years preaching the Gospel. After traveling for two months, he reached New York. By January, he had reached Cincinnati, Ohio and was welcomed by Bishop Edward Fenwick. While learning the Ojibwa language, Baraga preached to German Catholics in Cincinnati. From there he moved to his first mission among the Indians in Arbre Croche, now Harbor Springs, Michigan. Barraga published the first books written in the Ottawa language, including a catechism and prayer book. He also wrote a grammar and dictionary of the Chippewa language that is still used today. In September of 1833, Baraga founded another mission at Grand River (now Grand Rapids). He became known as “the Snowshoe Priest” because of his habit of traveling hundreds of miles a year, even in the harshest winters.

In November of 1853, Barraga was elevated to bishop by Pope Pius IX. He was the first bishop of the Diocese of Sault Sainte Marie (now the Diocese of Marquette). His jurisdiction extended to the whole Upper Peninsula of Michigan, a large part of the Lower Peninsula, Northern Wisconsin and the north shore of Lake Superior. Because of the lack of priests, Baraga continued to travel throughout his diocese to care for those he was responsible for. He also kept a diary of his missionary travels in several languages including German, English, Slovene, Chippewa, Latin and Italian. These accounts were published in Europe and help inspire others priests to come to the New World as missionaries, including St. John Neumann and Father Francis Xavier Pierz.

Because of his hard work and effort, one year before he died Baraga was able to report to the Holy See that his diocese had enough priests and churches for the fast growing population. In the Fall of 1866 while attending the Council of Baltimore, Baraga suffered a stroke. Fearing that his brother bishops would not allow him to return home, Baraga begged the priest who had accompanied him, Fr. Bourion, to help him return home to die among his people. He helped the ailing bishop back to Marquette. After a short improvement, Bishop Frederic Baraga, the Shepherd of the Wilderness, passed away on January 19, 1868. He was declared venerable by Pope Benedict XVI on May 10, 2012. On July 24, 2012, a bronze statue of Bishop Baraga was unveiled in Grand Rapids, near St. Andrews Cathedral, to honor his efforts in 1833 to establish the first Catholic mission in the Grand Rapids area.
